I have tried the "search" function and found all sorts of stuff but cannot find the answer that I seek from the Lords of welding wisdom. I bought an SA200 Shorthood today (code 1903) that's a 1951 model and am wondering about the engine. According to the owner's manual that I pulled up online it has an F162 in it and I want to know what the difference is between the F162 and the F163. This engine is suppose to run good but it will take a few $$ and time to find out.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Interesting. Bob Miller (Central CA) just asked the same question over on the Miller forum.Basically, the F163 has larger crank/rod bearing journals than the F162 and a slightly higher compression ratio (7.4:1-vs.6:1). Both are 162 cu.in. displacements with the same bore and stroke.Typical way to tell them apart from a distance is the 162 has a screw on oil fill cap and the 162 has the slightly larger twist on tab style.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Mine is certainly the 162 then, it has an oil filler cap that looks like a screw on cap for a for a piece of gas line or galvanized pipe! I also noted on Bill's Welding Repair's web page that the rebuild cost for a 162 is quite a bit higher than the cost for a 163 rebuild. Any idea why that would be?StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Not sure exactly. Setting the crankshaft end clearance is a little more involved on the 162 (involves a shim pack vs. a flanged center bearing and perhaps the smaller 162 bearings are more expensive.Other than that - MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I was stumped as to why the cost difference also but what you said makes sense. Thanks a LOT for the help here Duane. StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks! |
