How do I create a rolled edge to finish it like you see on boxes etc made out of light gauge sheet metal? I have a magnetic break an some hand tools. Help me out. Thanks.
Reply:I don't know much about magnetic brakes, but a hem is typically a 1/2" bend that is bent 45 degrees over and then flattened. Either closing the top leaf or putting it between the closed top leaf and the bottom leaf, then bringing up the bottom leaf results in closing up the hem.
Reply:what type of material are you bending?
Reply:Mild steel in light gauges. Would it be different for aluminum?
Reply:A lot of aluminum alloys won't allow a sharp bend. 3003 is typically used when bends are needed. A lot of it will bend for a small bit and then crack.
Reply:I dont think a mag break can do this. Ive only done it on a press break. I believe it can be done on a traditional finger break though I have never done it.Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 03-20-2016 at 09:34 PM.
Reply:When I work in signs we hemmed with the leaf break ,we would do 8 foot pieces ,then roll them flat with a pexto and a special die set.
Reply:I'm not exactly sure what hem profile you are trying to create, but you can use a piece of round stock tacked to the edge of a bar for your top die on a magnetic break. You can bend some really complex shapes on a mag brake if you scratch your head a bit. You can even bend up a single flat into a six sided cube.RyanMiller Multimatic 200 tig/spool gun/wireless remoteMillermatic 350P, Bernard/XR Python gunsMiller Dynasty 350, Coolmate 3.5 & wireless remoteCK WF1 TIG wire feederMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeOptrel e684Miller Digital EliteMiller Weld-Mask |
