All, if I run out of 1/16 mild steel TIG rod can I used twisted strands of flux core as a substitute?  I'm only practicing TIG so it's no real issue if I can't.I just want to use what I have if it's possible.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:I would say no as the flux from the mig wire will contaminate the tig weld, the argon gas mixing with the flux probably wouldnt work out well, just use some wire coat hangers, bailing wire or any other clean metal strands.. ( for practice only) if you have no other tig rods to use ..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:The prefix ER, in a wire such as ER70S-2 (common MIG and TIG wire,) means E=Electrode and R=Rod. This means it can be used as and Electrode for arc welding in a process such as GMAW (MIG). The Rod means it can be used as a rod in a process where the filler metal is not the electrode, such as GTAW (TIG) or Oxy Fuel welding.  If the wire only has an E for a suff this means that it can only be used as an electrode. A perfect example for this is E71T-C (common flux core wire) which cannot be used as a Rod.  If you have any MIG wire laying around use that.  It might be fun to try some flux core wire for poops and laughs. Don't be afraid to experiment, that is how you learn.Good luck,Jesse
Reply:Are you a long way from your lws? I get my 1/16 70s2 for 3 bucks a pound.try to Practice with good technique or don't practice at all.

Reply:Im sure you could use the fc It might act a little funky with the mixing gases. Give it a try. I don't think it will blow up or anything lol. Have fun learning! Have you ever tiged at all?all you need is a #5 cup and 12cfh or less. Unless you pull the tungsten out like a inch. I actually pulled the tungsten out a 1/2 inch the other night at 12 cfh with a #5 cup and it welded clean and the tungsten was still grey not discolored one bit.Last edited by motolife313; 12-31-2014 at 02:45 PM.
Reply:Isn't fc real expensive?
Reply:There are flux cored tig rods for stainless root passes where purging or solar B flux is not feasible. Have not tried it but want to.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I never tried it but with regular flux core wire one thing is guaranteed to happen...One big mess....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:If you have some 1/16" arc rod just knock off the flux, brush and tig away.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:Out of boredom one day I took a bit of .052 flux core wire and tried to run it as a tig filler. It adds some weird colors to the arc and makes it a bit hard to see whats going on, But it lays down a bead. Even had to chip off the slag too.

Reply:Originally Posted by ttoksTGX is another one, which ive used quite a   bit, fc tig wire needs a different technique to solid wire, you have to weld low and slow, to add wire bring the weld pool over to the parent metal for an open root, and dab a small amout of wire, then wash back to the other prep, repeat, if you add wire to the center of the weld pool as with solid wire, bits of wire will push through the weld pool and stick into the pipe.
