Most recent job is making a new spare tire mount for a trailer for a local company's bumper pull. Employee was pulling the trailer and was forced out of his lane by another driver and the mount was on the outside of the trailer, and it hit a lightpole as he was driving. here is the aftermath:So I need to make them another one. Pretty simple, the material I will be using is all scrap which means more profit for me Some Channel, a piece of 2 3/8 oil stem pipe, some 3/16 plate for the gussets, and the round circle mount is 1/8 sheet.First to cut out the circle for the mounting faceNext I held the circle plate against the wheel and spray painted the bolt pattern on so I could drill the holes where they needed to be. There will be 3 studs welded on like the original design. Then I welded the pipe and gussets on. This is my first time welding pipe with mig, ive only previously done stick before so I am still getting the hang of it. I still have so much to learn when it comes to all types of welding, ive only been welding for about a year and I just do small odd jobs like this on the side. both these gusset welds were done in the horizontal position. Then the mounting face was tacked on, 3 more gussets were tacked on in between the holes for the studs. Gussets were tacked on before final welding of the pipe to the mounting plate to reduce warpage on the 1/8 sheet. I would have wanted to use 3/16 or higher for the mounting part but only had a piece of 1/8 that was big enough.gussets were then fully welded out. horizontal and vertical down. The horizontal weld i believe was a little cold it looks like, I moved the amperage and wirefeed down to try to reduce heat input into the metal but then decided that wasnt a smart decision. And here is a few pics of the rest of it. I will be taking my engine drive out to the company sometime this week to weld it on the trailer, and will be welding the studs in when i am there to ensure that the spare wheel will fit before they are fully welded.
Reply:That should work just fine...
Reply:Looks good man!  Only thing I like to do is wrap all my corners on my welds just don't stop at the end.

Reply:Originally Posted by vettelvr75Okay. I am working on learning that, how do you do it without the puddle burning the edge off? Every time I got close to the end I would see the puddle about to burn it off. Should I just let it burn the end off and allow the puddle to fill in the little that was lost?
Reply:Originally Posted by Murphy's lawYes sir your right, just get in a position where you can try to go around the corner.  Yes you will loose some of the corner but there will be a nice weld there.  I'm sorry if I'm not explaining well.  Good luck man!
