Machining Machine Chucks..

Last time we saw these the kid was finishing up welding the OD'S before he went back to school and member Tamper sent me a P/M asking if I would post pics of the machining process..So here you go Tamper..These come in various shapes but are all finished the same way and the OD'S are all the same size when done..11.995+.000  -.002First thing I do is get the flat face bull center out and put it up against the back so it don't fall out of the chuck as I get it "Round" by eye..Note the chuck jaws..They 'aint holding much..When it's close I move the center and indicate the rear step into zero all the way around..Next thing is to indicate the rear face in as close as you can to zero also..Next post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Now as a general rule of MY thumb I turn .003 off the inside face and the back face so everything is dead nuts true..I just run some emery cloth over the step to clean it up..Skim cut the back inside and outside..Then give the OD (Rear) a clean up pass..Here is the backside and rear OD done..Now turn it around and with the help of my special piece of square tubing it stays flat up against the chuck jaws..One more post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Now we just indicate the OD in near the chuck and now you are POSITIVE the chuck runs true with the backside..If not then a very bad vibration will happen just like a tire out of balance and that's NO GOOD with a 40 ton paper roll mounted to the chuck..Here is a finished chuck ready to go..It's not the same one that I have in the lathe now but you get the idea of what it looks like all done..And with that..I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I am always amazed by the machining you do zap. Getting something like that flat & square in the lathe is just mind boggling. Reply:Nice work.I use to do lots of build up like that for a machine shop. Lots and lots of Stellite #6 and #12.It's so hard if the cut was interrupted it had to be ground on a lathe rather than cut with a cutting tool.
