Where to install the kill switch?  Would it go inline between the alternator and the ampmeter?FYI: I plan on wiring this right now without an ampmeter so that wire will hitch with one from the starter button and go directly to the battery+Last edited by goinssr; 01-16-2011 at 05:32 PM.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:Does your SA200 have a distributor or a magneto? If you have a Mag then it goes on the grounding lug on the mag.  It kills the engine by grounding out the lug.  The "ignition" is killed by the oil pressure switch as soon as the engine stops. And usually the ammeter connects to the starter (where the large wire connects).  That way you don't need to connect the small 10ga wire to the battery post.  And, if you're looking at the ammeter from the back, I think your wiring diagram will make it read backwards.   But I might be wrong on that.  I can't remember right now. lolGood luck
Reply:Just wire in any old toggle switch, one wire to the kill stud on the side of the magneto back to the  dead stud on the toggle switch, the other stud wire to the frame. Most of the little on / off tags have to be turned over. Reply:My shorthood has a FM magneto but there are no wires or anything on it except the plug wires so I'm a bit lost as to what you are talking about. This welder had NOTHING left of the electric start except the hole in the bellhousing so I'm starting from ground zero here. Reply:WOW CEP, beautiful machine. Its been years since I've welded with one of those, but I can still remember what it was like.  Thanks for posting a pic of such a nice restoration.  Looks great for sure.

Reply:That machine went up in smoke, I'm working on a deal with a pipelinner for another 4-gear generator, waiting for the phone to ring so I can go it! Here is my pride and joy, paid $200.00 for it! Reply:That's strange, it's missing the stud. Been ages since I had one apart that far back. Maybe someone else can remember how to attach the stud.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:This wiring diagram is not for the Shorthood, couldn't find one? But, it clearly shows how the kill switch, starter etc. are wired. Hold Ctrl down on your computer and push the "+,=" button to enlarge the image. Reply:I think it simply grounds the magneto out? This is a drawing of the stud going thru the mag body. I'm in the process of moving and can't find my magneto. It's in a box somewhere? If I find it I'll take photos. Reply:Okay....I understand how the kill switch works with the magneto now, it simply shorts it out to the frame to kill the engine.  One wire from the kill switch goes to the magneto and the other goes to the frame. When the toggle is switched to "on" it will complete the circuit and kill the engine.  When the toggle is switched to "off" it leaves the circuit open so that the magneto can send power uninterupted to the plug wires. Therefore making sense of what slowhand said when he mentioned that the on/off tag on the toggle switch must be turned upside down to read correctly. Now the question still beckons.....where do I connect the wire to my magneto?  It is different from the one that CEP posted!I no longer feel so stupid.....Last edited by goinssr; 01-16-2011 at 07:41 PM.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:I understand what your saying, and I know how it looks, but that is directly out of the pdf. for Fairbanks-Morse magnetos as the lug (it's a screw, smaller than 1/4") where the wire attaches to the magneto from the kill switch. I got the pdf. from Weldmart's Cd-Rom that is free from here: http://www.weldmart.com/SA200%20CATA...EST%20FORM.htmI tried to copy the whole page to here, but it had too many kb's and wouldn't transfer so I copied the drawing of the stud. Get you own CD from Weldmart and you can find almost any info you need for the SA200 welders.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

You're gonna have to get into that mag and install a screw so you have a way to kill the engine. I think its highly possible someone removed the jam nut and the screw fell inside the mag!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I put everything in place today and tried to start the welder.  I wired everything just like this diagram except for the ampmeter, I left it out of the loop. I hooked the positive to the battery first and then the ground. When the ground hit the terminal it started turning over just as if it were wired without the starter button. I pulled the starter button and checked it with a multimeter to make sure I didn't get one that was bad and it checked fine. On the starter relay there are two small studs marked "S" and "R". Does it make any difference which one that the wire directly from the starter button attaches to?StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:NEVER MIND!!  I figured it out!  I had it wired correctly but the cable from the battery positive was touching the small stud on the relay that the starter button wire went to and was completing the circuit just as if the starter button was being depressed. I feel so stupid but so much smarter. Tomorrow I put in gas and anti freeze and see what she has in her.  Hopefully it won't be too painful.  Stay tuned......StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Look at the ammeter as a flow indicator.  The needle is in the middle to begin with.  On the back are two posts.  On one of the posts you connect the battery.  On the other post you connect the load.If current is leaving the battery going to the load the ammeter shows a discharge of the amount of current passing through it because its indicating the direction of flow.  This flow moves the needle.  If the wires are on the proper post on the back of the meter then the meter shows the flow in the proper direction. If the alternator starts putting out current and charging the battery then the current flow is the opposite way through the ammeter, from the load side to the battery side, so the gauge's needle now swings the other way and shows a charge condition. As you know,  usually the starter wires does not go through the ammeter.  The meter could not handle that much current.  So generally the starter is the only current draw that doesn't show up as a discharge by the ammeter.Good luck
