Found this 4x4x3/8 plate at the scrapyard along with two ten foot sticks of 1/4 angle iron (galvanized).Cleaned the plate up and cut the legs.  Welded them up with Hobart 6011 because I ran out of 7018.  The 6011 dug well into the heavily rusted plate so that worked to my advantage.  I'm not done yet.  I have to get some cross-members to strengthen the legs and also weld some places to store clamps and other accessories.I'm not that great of a welder but this was a good project for me.  The 6011 was challenging. Reply:Looks like a winner to me. You can always add some cross bracing at the base later on as you said. Then put a wooden or expanded metal shelf across it to store stuff.I put a piece of 4" 3/16" angle along one section below the table top to store grinders too. You can add and modify as you go. Some small diameter pipe or tubing works well to hang C clamps on. You can maximize the space the table uses to your advantage. Give the top a good grinding with a domed grinding wheel when you're all done. Ghetto Blanchard Grinding! Put her to work! Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:Nice ! Better then working on the floor . You might want to consider adding steel to the underside of the top to help keep it flat. Receiver tubing will be handy too. You can only do so much as money and time permit.
Reply:I learned about taking galvanizing off from WW so I used some muriatic acid for that.  I'm almost out of my 6011 so it's time to get 10 more pounds of excalibur 7018.My other table is only 1/4 plate...this 3/8 plate is heavy for one small guy!Yes to the grinder storage as well.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:6011 will get the job done just fine for a lot of non critical stuff. Runs well on AC current too.Yeah, trailer type receiver ports are great for vices and other accessories. Add as you go!Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:Looks good man! Nothing like finding some old metal that would just sit and rot away and turning it into something useful! Great work
Reply:Nice table, you can never have enough surface area. I hope you made the same height as your other table so you can use for long pieces.I would round the corners a little so you don't snag yourself.Good job!Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:Your 6011 welds don't look all that bad. Hard to tell from the picts posted, but it looks like you may be aiming a bit more on the plate than on the angle in some of those picts. The lower toe looks good, but it looks like you have some trapped slag where it meets the edge of the leg. Watch your rod angle. The weld shown in pict 2 looks quite nice for someone unfamiliar with 6010/11. There's some slag top and bottom, but I bet a good cleaning with a wire brush on a grinder might get most of that out..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW, thanks for the feedback.  I went to get more bracing for the table this weekend, but I could not get in.  They have a temporary ban on all customer scrounging because someone got hurt the other day while in their scrap yard.  They are reviewing their customer policy/legal status for the moment. When they do open back up, I'll be in there finding some angle iron or some large 1 inch rebar to use as bracing and storage racks for under the table.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
