My partner and I are looking for a way to thread bolts, rods, etc that is a bit better than a craftsman tap and die set. Suggestions? Thx!
Reply:Ridgid pipe threader with a set of bolt dies would probably be the cheapest route...though far from cheap in comparison to a Craftsman tap & die set. I use a Ridgid Pony 700...never for threading bolts or rod since I don't own any bolt dies (tell ya' the truth, don't even know if Ridgid bolt dies are available for the Pony or not, but imagine so as they use the standard Ridgid hand threading dies.)For tapping I just hang a tapping head in either the mill or drill press and go to town.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:a lathe.. If your needing bulk quantities I would look into getting quotes from a machine shop with a cnc lathe, or screw machine...tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Lathe..Is this a trick question?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:It depends on how large or small you are looking to thread.  We regularly thread 1"-2" A36 rods for tie rods and anchor bolts and use a stationary threading machine.  If you are looking at larger or smaller diameters, a lathe or handheld threading machine may be more appropriate.
Reply:Ridgid 300 with a bolt die head.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:So with a lathe, which makes sense in our shop anyway, what dies do you use? Suggestions on Lathe?

Reply:So far, thanks to you all and to the dismay of my wife, I have purchased a porta-band with table, drycut saw, bench vise,  made the welding table of my dreams (pics later), the workholding jig (pics later), etc, etc so I get alot out of this. Restoring cars in a dedicated shop so we wouldnt be threading anything higher than 1 inch and only on occasion. When I welded the ball bearings to the hex bolt for the workholding jig, I could have used a lathe to trim some of the metal away from the ball, so a lathe would be nice anyway. Thanks for the tip. I will do more research on what lathe and dies, etc I need.

Reply:Same here. I go for a Rigid 300. No regrets.
Reply:All lathes can thread..you just have to know what you are doing...
Reply:I had to make 100 3/4" rods threaded on both ends about 8' long.  I used a standing pipe threading machine with dies, they are made for both pipes or bolt threading. The portable model would probably work just as well.  A lathe would work if your rod will fit through the hole. If you don't have a lot to do, most metal supply shops have a threading machine.  Most hardware stores do too, but you might have to buy the die as they usually just do pipe.
