Sa200 soleniod

I've got a 82 green light sa200 that I'm cleaning up and working the bugs out of[been sitting for sometime]. Can you hook 12 volts up to the soleniod to see if it works ? Is it safe to do so ?
Reply:If you're referring to the idler solenoid - yes.  Keep in mind the idler board controls the ground for the solenoid so if you leave it hooked up, don't apply 12vdc+ to the wire coming from the board. Reply:Soleniod and bracket are off the machine. Was curious if hooking up the two wires to a 12 volt battery would tell me if my soleniod is good or not.

Reply:It's dead. Is it possible for it to be stuck ? Didn't make any noise at all when hooked up to 12 volts.

Reply:I've got a multi meter but haven't a clue what to set the ohms at. 20m , 2000m , 200k , 20k , 200 , or ?  If you didn't notice I'm electrically illiterate.

Reply:20k and 200k I get 0.  On 200 I get 26.5.

Reply:Make sure the springs aren't broken and missing or needle valve plugged up.  There is a little felt filter can be missing too a cigarette filter or little piece of felt works to replace that.  Solenoid inside should be clean and not sticking.  Don't oil and grease it that will attract more dust and make it stick again leave it dry or just use graphite or dry silicone if anything on it.  Here are links to the R57 idler manuals.  http://www.lincolnelectric.com/Asset...N3/IM179G1.pdfhttp://www.lincolnelectric.com/Asset...OLN3/IM179.pdf
Reply:My idler isn't a r-57.  I guess you would call it a electric idler.Machine is a 1982 model.

Reply:You still need the plunger clean and dry.  Check all your connections and wires.  Make sure linkages are all working free not binding.  IM-277 covers the electronic idlers.  New link to that manual I recently got from Lincoln after they changed their site and hid all the old stuff now.  Was going to post all 3 and it didn't work but then did later just try it again later if doesn't open. ..  Duane, I think my brain was still frozen from being out in the blizzard we were having up here in the panhandle.  http://www.lincolnelectric.com/Asset...OLN3/IM277.pdf

Reply:We never got above freezing today up here but that wind let up so was still better than the -20 to -30 wind chill had before.  Wind whipped snow into 4 ft. drifts where you didn't want it instead of staying in the fields.
