Hello, I am new here, and I'm not sure how to word this question. I have been welding since January on a crappy HF welder I got for $100. Its surprisingly capable and I have been teaching myself how to weld with it. I managed to make a roof rack for my car and a few skate rails. My biggest limiting factor right now is budget. I want to learn TIG, as it has a lot of cool automotive applications but the welders I have my eyes set on are all far and above anything I can afford right now (I am in college and don't have a lot of money floating around). I also want to learn to bend tube for rollcages and bumpers, however after doing some research I have determined that attempting to modify anything from harbor freight isn't worth my time and I should just cough up the $300+ for a JD2 Bender (I don't have $300, and if I did I would rather spend it on a TIG machine)Here is my question then. Is there anyone in the Salt Lake area who would be interested in letting me use their facilities for DIY projects? I know people don't like to share their tools (for good reason) but I am willing to clean your shop or do some chores in exchange for TIG and tube bending time. In addition, I am leaving in early May, so if you hate me either tell me to screw off (and I will) or just wait a few weeks  I would offer to help out with welding projects but I am not confident in my abilities to meet professional standards, so I won't even offer. I am however quite good at GoogleSketchUp and Adobe Photoshop, and I have done paid work in both if you need anything modeled or edited I can do that for you instead of chores. Hell, I will even teach you SketchUp so you can do it on your own, I have taught lessons in HS on SketchUp and have written SketchUp instructions, and I have been told I am a good software teacher. If any of you have alternative methods of gaining access to a good TIG machine without spending $1000+ (I am looking at one of the Everlast AC/DC welders right now thats about $1600 I think)(Ya ya, Everlast blah blah, I have done research, I know its no Miller, but its more within my budget) please let me know  Also, I am not really interested in becoming a professional welder or fabricator, I really like building stuff but I cannot build things for people I don't know well. (Projects for friends are different) So I don't really need an instructor, just access to a machine.Remember, if you need someone to sweep the shop and recycle your scrap, all I ask in return is a little TIG time Thanks guys!Last edited by KyleC; 04-05-2016 at 12:11 AM.
Reply:If nothing else you might look into something like a makerspace, where they have various tools available for use. College students often can get a discount on memberships. I wish there had been places like this when I was in college and had to make a lot of models as our school didn't have any shop facilities.I don't see a listing online for their metal working tools, but the site does say they have them. I doubt they have a bender, but many of these places have various welders available for use.https://makesaltlake.org/makesaltlak...efthomewidgets.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:kyle, you sound like the kinda guy that can   weasel yourself into anything.      Why not just show up at the college welding class,  walk in w/ the rest of students, and start welding like your supposed to be there?
