So the time has come that the company I work for is doing major lay offs and is offering up a 15,000$ pay out voluntary lay off! I'm taking it and running next round might be nothing or more atleast I come out ahead. I just thought I would share this and see what other people's experiences are with these situations. I'm taking my chance because I hit a dead end here and can't advance in my career. And am unhappy I know I'm a good welder and will survive!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:Look at it this way, take the bucks guaranteed or gamble. If you take the chance YOU most likely will still get laid off and no $$$$. My brother in law worked for Caterpillar and they did the same thing to dispose of the old guys, he was 60 at the time. They were told they would get '' X '' amount of $$ by retiring now OR take a chance at getting  laid off.  There was around 30 guys at the time eligible. He took his along with about a dozen others. Well after they took the buy out the balance , ALL of them got laid off two weeks later. Good Luck !!!!
Reply:Take the documents to a lawyer and have them read it for you and get some advice. Just do not use a company lawyer. Was offered a severance package with my lay-off and the lawyer told me not to sign it. By signing it was giving up the right to sue and my kids the right to sue if i got sick from the chemical exposure. The documents made it sound like would not get paid for vacation hours or bonus. So after some thought did not sign anything and still got payed vacation and bonus. Turns out quite a few of former workers from there have cancer and other illnesses. Gave up about 20 k , but have always been a saver and investor so I am getting by. While it was not easy, it is survivable. The only thing you can not survive is death. As long as you are alive and breathing you have a chance to fight and get ahead in the game of life.I am not a sue happy person even though this part of Texas is. Just did not want to give up my right to. You would not believe how many people did not make 5 yr after retirement.Last edited by guajilloweld03; 03-10-2016 at 10:37 PM.
Reply:hyde; it has been my experience that what I think is a tragedy at the time later turns out to be a blessing. the next job you find will be better for you. keep a positive outlook and don't give up.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:On big jobs or large employers often it is wise to be one of the first to go.  Imagine what your chances are locally when 100 get laid off and they all are looking for work opposed to when five or ten of you hit the job market. Don't take the money and lay back on the couch even for a week.  Look at the money as a cushion and support to allow you to pack up and move to another locality for work or to retrain or upgrade your certs.  Also do not cash in any retirement package if you had anything running.  It will grow even after you leave and Revenue Canada will find you when you are 65.  I forgot about some retirement money I left behind in 1986 for about three months work.  When they found me it was work 19K or 8k if I took cash.Last edited by lotechman; 03-11-2016 at 09:56 AM.

Reply:Originally Posted by WNY_TomB.i worked for a company 32 years and by waiting to get laid off or take package when offered i got a extra roughly 48 weeks pay plus i got what was in retirement account that company setup and i did not contribute anything to it. because my company was going through bankruptcy i could only get it as a monthly annuity checks (setup if i die first my wife gets 75% the rest of her life too).so i get about (month annuity check rest of my life)$1000./month$300/month (extra cause i waiting to get laid off or take package).....total $1300/month for the rest of my life but cause i got another job it is maybe $1000. after taxes taken out.. it did not start til i signed papers promising not to sue my old company which is standard for most companies before retirement funds start. .took me 3 weeks to get new job offer and it was 6 weeks after i got laid off i started new job. old company gave or continued  12 weeks pay to help find job so for 6 weeks i was getting double pay..but finding another job when older is not easy. many places do not want to hire anybody over 30 years old and especially if over 50. many, many people i know had trouble finding another job or if they did start new job they got laid off again within 1 year. i have had new job now for over 3 years.so i got lucky. with what i have in 401K plus monthly annuity checks i can get by without a job if needed, i work to have more in 401K and i like to work. i believe it is important to find a job you like to do..i highly recommend if offered take a month annuity rather than a lump sum. too many people waste a lump sum then end up with nothing when retired. my experience getting steady monthly annuity checks i no longer worry about getting laid off or loosing a job. maybe not getting much but it is enough not to starve for as long as it takes to get another job. it really takes a load of worry away.

Reply:If I got an e-mail right now telling me there is a voluntary lay off, I would be knocking people over during my sprint to the bosses office to tell him "I'll take it !!!!".     But that is only because I am miserable here doing software support.   It's a good job with great pay and benefits.  Management is good.  Nothing to complain about really.  I just need to do something else.  And since I don't know what else I would do, I don't yet have a reason to leave.   But a voluntary layoff would definitely be that reason.   So you got my vote for +1 on the voluntary package.Century buzzbox that I learned on 40+ years ago (was Dad's)Crappy Century 110volt mig 70 amp pigeon pooper.Lincoln Idealarc TIG-300

Reply:Been working at the machine shop for a little over two weeks not much going on for diversity but I am doing a lot of build up work. Owner says I can work from home if I get my business number and a decent machine. I'm looking at either a everlast 200dx or a lincoln square wave 200. I currently have a Miller thunderbolt ac and power mig 140 but I fell with 200a I would be better offSent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
