So I started off my my custom bumper build on here. Loved the way that came out and started looking for other things to make so I took a shot at a head rack. I got some 2x4 3/16 cut in pieces from a friend and started building! I thought I had more pics the one with the screen Is the one I made fur my buddy's f350 Attached Images
Reply:leave a spot to crawl out the back window if you roll over.  Also gives you better visibility with your rear view mirror.  Put a small tab on the top corners to keep things from sliding off the side of the top rail and you might give yourself a place to tie things down.  Many run a double top bar to give a spot to attach/wrap straps or chains when hauling long material like steel and lumber.  Also might need to think about supporting the tailgate as it will bend if you haul heavy material.  I've seen some slick rear supports o oilfield rigs that used hammer unions to attach and swing out of the way when not in use.  I like a simple diamond plate angle reinforcement as it seem to help hold things like lumber from sliding.   And last but not least you need some additional tie downs in the middle and rear section of the bed or top rails to attach straps and chains. Easier to run rails all the way back and incorporate tie downs into them.  If you run the rails all the way back you can load things from the rear with a fork lift which can be convenient.I used mine today hauling some lumber and linoleum from menards and last week hauling some 24 ft pieces of galvanized square tubing for some street signs.
Reply:Im going to be making some feet with with thandle bolts tapped into the head rack so I have a few positions to put them. I started a rack to put on the back but was having a hard time fabing up some mounts that will make it easily removable, so I put it on the back burner Attached Images

Reply:Thank you, didnt think id be making them prople. Going on my third one pretty soon. Not going to use 3/16, going with 1/8.
Reply:How are you mounting it onto the bed? You may have had it in the picture but I didnt notice. I have thought about making some up and selling them but haven't figured out all the parts of stuff like that and have been too busy to.
Reply:I just used 1/4-20 bolts through my toolbox and bed rails. 2per side hold it fine because of the large footprint on the bed rails
Reply:1/4 is very small. I'd go with 3/8 or bigger.
Reply:What if you get a big girl back there holding on to that thing while wheeling or somthing. It might come loose
Reply:The clamping strength of the bolts are 1577lbs. So in theory I could pick the truck up if the bed would hold. And the girl are always in the cab with me haha
Reply:Simple is key here. Love it! What year 350?  Could you state your measurements?
Reply:It was a 97.  Not sure of the measurements. Mainly cut and fit. If I built another then.id measure
Reply:I'm planning on building one like that........only I'm going to use 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 or 4 so I can install 2" lights on the side of it and angle the brake and reverse lightsMiller 252Miller Bobcat 225Lincoln MigPak 1801959 Hyster forkliftHarris OA torch
Reply:It will be close with the 2 1/2. The rubber gromet takes alot of room
Reply:Picked up a 1995 ford f 350 4x4 regular cab. 460, 5 speed Dana front and rear.  Hope to have some pics this summer of new bumpers and flatbed.  HH 140Uniweld Torches14" Cut offLast edited by ckobesko; 02-14-2015 at 11:12 AM.

Reply:Did you cut and notch or heat and bend?
Reply:I welded some pipe to the table, and got down with the rosebud. It took one mess up to find out to REALLY spread the heat out. Reply:Haha I bed. Id figure try to keep the heat off the inside so It didnt collapse when you bent it
Reply:Bout cherry red on the inside, and yellow on the outside about 4x farther than bending for stretch kept a lot of the collapse out. Looks better in my opinion than the tubing bent on some new rigs we got this year.Powcon 300st (my favorite)Miller Goldstar 600ssLincoln Idealarc 400/400Miller 12vs2 LN25'sMiller Deltaweld 302Miller Bobcat 250 G EFIMiller Bobcat 225d Plus (Dropped a valve, up soon)Everlast 255ext (ordering soon!)
Reply:I've found the oval tail lights holes easy to make.  2 1/2" hole saw two holes 4 1/4" center line if I recall correctly, old age, contrary to popular opinion memory is the first thing to go, not second.life is good
