65 sa 200  ,  cold start on 3/16 " and 5mm rods  . Takes about 3 secondsor so before heat comes on and arc smoothes out and a couple more seconds untill full heat  , even if i have it maxed out , it will burn hotter but same thing it takes time to build heat , smaller dia rods ok .   Test at high idle are:    plug in tested  119 volts and with range selector in firts gear and fine current maxed ( as i was told )  is at 96 .  I have new : carb , brushes all new and seated, idle up grade , reostat . Could this be a gov problem under load ??  Is this normal for older sa 200's because it doesnt feel normal  .
Reply:The only question I have concerning your post is, "what does the engine sound like?"Is the engine reving up properly?Does it "come alive" like it should?Or is it studdering and not reving up like it should? The output or your welder is directly related to the output of your engine.  If the engine isn't putting out like it should, or in this case - not reving up like it should, then the welder's output will also suffer as a result.  (a direct result).Which is it?  The engine or the generator.... lolGood luck
Reply:revs up crisp n fast no studder  , revs down smooth no crackling no poping . when im  using 3/16 or larger dia rod  it lugs down a bit not much  then picks up and heat does the same , it would be fine on structural but a pain on pipe. first i am going to clean all conections and replace all bolts in the exiter and welder  verry rusty  , this 200 sat in an open car port on the east coast ( salt air ) for many years, then i will try the govenor  . I dont think its  a major  problem i hope. I will up date progress when i can but friday i have to be in the st. lu   area  for an outage then  to chicago area, making rig money.

Reply:Wow thanks for blessing me with your vast comprehension of simple physics . LOL . I adjusted my gov  that fixed it , sure glad i didnt go ahead and work on my engine. LOL.1965 sa-200,max star 150,hobart 140 wire. and other stuff.
Reply:Glad you got it figured out man.  Do this..... Like I do....When I strike an arc, I'm aware of the heat I'm running and the rod I'm using, and the way I've got my machine setup.... so I'm expecting it to work like such.....  then I try to be aware of what the machine does - setup like I have it set.  If I notice anything thats "amiss"  then I'm pretty well assured that something is wrong and I might have an idea what to do to fix it.What I'm getting at is this.  Keep aware of what you've got and what you're set at - then pay attention to what the machine does then, then you'll know.  That might sound difficult but believe me its not that hard in real life.  lolYea, it helps to have years and years of experience, but then again - its all memory, so all those years might be not be so good in the end.    Just get used to what your machine should sound like "setup like you have it set" then if you hear something else then you'll know its not right.  Make it sound like you want it to sound - doing what you're doing.  Then it will be "setup to you".  lolI know that "might sound too deep", but if you think about it - I am right.  Your machine should sound "right" to "you" when you're doing what you know you are doing - and its right.  If it ain't - then there will be something wrong.  You'll know it.  Get my drift?Good luckLast edited by slowhand; 02-12-2011 at 05:18 PM.
