Info on sa 200

My uncle just gave me a sa 200 welder that I would like to get some info on.Code 7789Serial A-861680He said it needs a new magneto, any idea how much and where to get one?

Reply:Is the faceplate the only place on the machine that has the serial number? My uncle said that his father purchased the machine in the mid 70's and it was old then. I am thinking that maybe the faceplate has been replaced.Thanks for the info.

Reply:That's the code number stamped on the generator housing just ahead of the starter usually.  Engines and generator barrels can get changed around over the years though.  Fairbanks Morse, American Bosch & Wico magnetos were used on them and all parts are available to rebuild them.  I've been rebuilding mags for 30 years and also have exchange units or parts lists if want to tune it up yourself just PM or email me.  All the others just want to sell you a electronic dist kit they don't fix mags anymore but not everyone can always afford to go that route.  The dist won't fit on older engines either that don't have the plug knock out hole on top of the head.  Lincoln operators manuals  http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...ualsearch.aspxLincoln parts listshttp://www.lincolnelectric.com/produ...e/partsnav.aspContinental parts: many times Montes can date the engine from tag numbers too.http://www.montesequipment.com/Serial number listshttp://www.billswelderrepair.com/WELDER_AGE.htmlhttp://www.billswelderrepair.com/Engine-Drives.html
Reply:My sa 200 does not have the air cleaner, can I run a cone filter off the carburator or do I have to run the canister style filter?
Reply:I don't really like the K&N filters but you can run those and if do need to carry a couple spares along.  Depends on conditions you work the most in.  Bill's or Stumpfs or others in ads here or online sell the K&N or will have used oil bath canister type.  Fowlers Hybriweld now has a kit for new Donaldson dry type air cleaner that works well it comes with brackets and stuff to mount it plus heater tube kit.http://hybriweld.com/products/air-cl...cc31c31e9bcc27
Reply:Stumpf's does not sell the K & N filter but they do usually have a good used original air filter assy for about $100

Reply:There are no cold air intakes for the SA-200.  Both the oil bath and the K&N take air from the same place under the cover and so the intake air is the same temp.My preference is for the pre-heater to minimize carburetor icing in cold weather.  Just had a bout of that with my chainsaw and it sure made for an interesting day A K&N filter won't have that feature.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:There are dry filter kits out there to put on them.  Weldmart sells one by EnginAire.  Fowlers, Hybriweld sells one I think is better it is made by Donaldson.  You have to realize many of these machines still being used out there are 20 to 60 years old so the original oil bath air cleaner can be rusted out, the metal shavings inside rusted out or plugged with hard grease, gunk, mud dober nests and just can't do the job anymore.  If your oil bath air cleaner is in good shape yet it will do the job fine.  If spending some $$$$ for a engine overhaul, new carb and all why would want to risk a old rusted out air filter that can't do it's job.  That is why the dry filter kits came about and some just don't want the mess of cleaning a oil bath.  It's not just a matter of choice but a matter if your filter is doing it's job if not replace it.  You can still use the warm air tube on the dry filters.http://hybriweld.com/products/air-cl...6ea72531eccab5
