Hello I've got a 200 dx and have placed it on a shelf about 5.5' off the ground along with the cooler to save space so it will be difficult to reach the power switch on the back, my question is could I wire it to a heavy duty switch of some sort and just leave the power on at the machine and just control it and the mentioned switch? I want to make sure it will not be damaging the machine every time I cycle the power on. Attached Images
Reply:You could connect it to a double pole breaker in a small box (such as a 70 amp Square D QO box) and use that to turn it on and off. Don't see that being much if any issue. You can run an outlet right off it to plug the welder in too. I do prefer to keep my inverter machines unplugged however, when I'm not using them. Power surges and lightning strikes can damage them. Breakers and shutoff switches are not effective for isolating high power spikes such as those things. I repair machinery for a living and have personally seen several machines seriously damaged from power surges due to being left plugged in.Perhaps have the cord run to a recepticle that you can reach and unplug when not in use. Running power to a single box breaker switch would be simple and not very expensive. I use those type of boxes to turn a number of machines off and on in my shop.IMHO of courseExpert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:QO200TR is a small enclosure with non fused disconnect shaped like a circuit breaker. I pay about $18 for them.WillieAn optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Thanks for the replies, I just want to make sure the welder won't be damaged by not using the flip switch on the back to power it on and off.

Reply:I feel for you.  My Power Max 45 and my Powcons have the switches on the back. The Powcon switches are the worst. I just live with it.  I do know that breakers are not intended to be used as on/off switches even tho people do it all the time.  I am not sure if it hurts the machine or not.  Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:Just a dumb thought but could you take switch out of welder and extend the wires down to a reachable level and reuse switch?

Reply:I think putting them up there would be a PITA changing the settings, what about the cooler how are you going to wire it, to come on with the welder? What if you get a leak that will make a mess running down on everything.I just don't think putting them up that high is a good idea.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Reply:It's not to bad I actually like it, the cooler thing is a good point but I don't really want it on a cart as it would be another item on the floor. I'm cramped for space right now.
Reply:There's an outlet directly below the shelf, the cooler has a on off switch.

Reply:Make sure you tie the welder and cooler down. Wouldn't want them to endup on the floor when you trip over the work cable.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:Good idea, I will do that.

Reply:I saw that one I had it in my hand when I saw the switch, the switch is 11 dollars. Thanks guys
Reply:I've personally went to using these for any heavy duty switching needs I have. The box is like $14 and a 30 amp breaker would be prolly under $12. I think they offer more room to run wire and a little more robust construction than a switch. Run a short rigid nipple with nuts to a Raco box and install a corresponding outlet (Nema 6-50 IIRC) and you're golden.IMHO of course Attached ImagesLast edited by 7A749; 04-11-2016 at 01:37 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:I've got too run a couple of junction boxes for the dynasty and to run my mig and compressor I'm using 8 gauge on everything, it gets tight quick so I can see that coming in handy.
Reply:Here's a pic of everything I plan to put up there. Attached Images
Reply:I never will understand why so many welders have the switches on the rear. On what other type of machine do they locate the switch on the BACK of it! Reply:But Mom, the QO200TR is a lot cheaper, has a 60 amp rating, and is designed for switching duty. It comes with its own enclosure. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:Lowes, Home Depot, etc. also stock that, and you may come out better without shipping. You can also put a breaker in it, if the application needs it/meets code/etc. - the switch is basically a breaker built with no trip mechanism in it . . . same form factor. You could also put in a pair of single pos]le breakers and use it as a protected 120V drop from a 240V outlet.- TimLast edited by tadawson; 04-12-2016 at 06:08 PM.

Reply:Thanks for the slap to the back of the head, I never planned on it if it makes you feel better. I appreciate criticism but that's pushing it. Here is what it looks like now. Everything works great in the new setup, I just bought a new house and this is how it will be for a while. Attached Images
