Not only is he an outstanding weldor, he can also play the piano!Dynasty 280DX

Reply:He certainly is CEP, especially for being only 25 or 26 years old.  He's got 51 or 52 welding tickets displayed.  That's a lot of time and dollars right there.  When he accepted comments, he would answer every question ever asked, in detail.  He had time for everyone.  I'm glad he's doing vids again, but I don't think he'll allow comments anymore.Dynasty 280DX

He doesn't post here any more, which is a shame. He's genuinely funny too and has a great sense of humor.I'm sure time will change his perspective on that negative stuff. There's always gonna be haters.

Reply:I 've messaged Fieldres before actually asking about the comments. Like others were saying,  he would always answer questions and give thorough answers. He was saying that  when he took down the channel the first time, he was at a training center and that other welders were friendly, had encouraged him to bring back the channel and that some had said that they were in the training center taking courses because of what they saw, and that it had interested them.  So he said that that is the reason why he doesn't have comments as well  as takes down videos is because he doesn't want to give wrong information but rather he wants to give a sample or demo of something that hopefully would encourage the viewer to go in for learning.I've also asked him about how long he's been welding for and he said he started his apprenticeship in welding in 2006. Experience helps many guys, but I believe he is 26, and compared to others his age, I'd say he has more experience than even older welders who have less so he's definitely on the right track. Apparently he doesn't make anything on youtube but said the biggest reason he makes videos is as a means to help him practice better.

Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749Thanks. I wasn't too keen on Travis in the beginning, but after checking out more of his stuff, he's a real interesting guy. I personally think getting some long term on the job experience will help him a lot. He's still young, and no matter how many certifications you have, nobody circumvents paying their dues. It just doesn't work that way.Nowadays, somebody can make a ton of money doing youtube videos and not even have to "work" for a living. Lanse is a perfect example of that. I'm not bashing the kid, but am saying there's no substitute for real world experience over a course of time.I think Travis should do stand up comedy. He would make a killing because he's got it. He looks to be pretty genuine too.
Reply:Originally Posted by jeverichI haven't been able to watch too many of his videos; although, the crappy weather up here in Kodiak is giving me ample down time. He seems to be an incredibly talented individual - somewhat eccentric - I think we'd get along. His natural ability is beautifully impressive. I think FieldRes is unique in the sense that he has no reservations about displaying his talent. He doesn't spend 10 minutes pimping his sponsors - but as others have said, he doesn't make any money off of his You Tube efforts either. I give Lanse a lot of credit for having the salesmanship, ability and gumption to get out there and produce videos. I know I'd obsess over every negative comment that was directed towards me - I have a hard time not taking things like that personally. But that's just it - I feel like Lanse is more of a salesman. I don't see much substance in his videos, and the things that I do see are mostly rushed jobs and sub-par workmanship. I'm sure a lot of that is due to the fact that he's juggling several cameras whilst welding. Lanse's production value is pretty good, and he clearly puts a substantial amount of time into his videos. I rarely see or hear any discussion about his career as a welder, is he an independent contractor? Aside from getting free things to demo in videos like that, how do people make money from videos like that? Do they get kickbacks from sponsors, etc?

I'm not pro, but he's gotten dinged on giving bad info before. Of course, I cannot verify exactly what or when tho. I also agree his videos are mainly advertisement driven. At least from an experienced fabricator's point of view. One guy I've always admired on youtube is Jody Collier. No BS, very, very experienced and a genuinely nice guy always willing to help. Sure, he does ads in his vids, but his info is solid and he's got skills to back it up in a wide variety of welding disciplines. You make money on youtube for how many views and subscribers you have, then they insert commercials into the format for videos.I'm under the impression that you can make a LOT of money from this. They go by views I guess. I sure don't think Lanse has been hurting for any dough since he got popular. He's had his brushes with ppl here, mainly over his lack of formal experience and the import welders in his videos. He was kinds pissed off about it and hasn't posted as much since. It's a shame. I've met him in person and I have a lot of respect for him and what he's done. I think it's hard from a young guy's perspective sometimes, and because they're really talented or are successful you tube guys doesn't mean they can circumvent paying their dues. I have also seen videos where Travis was complaining about having all the certs he does but not getting called for a job. Well, son. Life is full of disappointments and just because you got a good hand doesn't mean you're always gonna get the job you want. It's called paying your dues and in most circles, going to school doesn't count. You gotta put the time in.It's just the way it is.Way I look at it is if you post stuff up in a public forum, expect criticism. It's going to happen. If you don't have thick skin, get some. If you're the type quick to get offended over troll comments, don't post up stuff on youtube, or disable the comments. It's a very poorly moderated site so trolls are going to be cheapshotting anyone they feel like since they'll likely get away with it. Used to happen here a lot, but most of the douchebags have hit the road. We have helped a few of them pack lol.IMHO of course

I don't really play anymore since I started having cubital tunnel problems about 6 months ago. I have a D-18 that I got for my 15th birthday, but it's pretty well wore out. Those recordings are on the Taylor I bought last year.
