Tried some razor blades. REAL razor blades. Anybody can do box cutter blades, and single edge utility razors are awfully thick... So I tried my hand at double edge shaving razors. Stainless steel, mic'd at 0.004" thick. I was stuck with 1/16" tungsten and 1/32" filler. This was my second attempt at it. Biggest problem was that when I'd touch the pedal, the shielding gas would blow the blades away. Miller Aerowave @ 5 amps. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:I know it's ugly, but it's only as thick as a sheet of notebook paper. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Thats what I said when I tried welding razors. I seen everyone using box cutter blades which are as thick as car bodies! At least the blades I used are thinner. I don't shave with replaceable blades so I really don't have a chance to use those. My one attempt a few years ago.
Reply:1st time attempt EVER on martensitic .009" SS razor blades. Dynasty 200DX. Pulsed. 25A, 250PPS, 40% background, 40% peak. 1/16" RED tungsten. Razor sharp with looong taper. LOTS of work req'd to advance progress and improvement. Jam'n a lap joint + fillet weld with 3ea blades is next up. Reply:If anyone wants some double edged blades like the OP's, let me know. I've been shaving with them and straight razors exclusively for the last 7 years or so.
Reply:I've been learning how to tig weld with razor blades since I got my new welder. I noticed that the high frequency arc start is causing you a problem getting your beads started. I too experienced that unstable current from the high freq. start process. My suggestion would be to get yourself a heavy piece of material i.e. 10 gauge and start the arc on the heavier material then transferred The ark to the razor blades. Also to resolve that burst of gas that you get from high pressure cheap regulators, remove the .375" or .250" gas line from the regulator to the machine and install .125 inch tubing from the regulator to the machine. I personally run .060 ID. Tubbing on my machine. This will not only save you gas on your initial start but you'll find that your start arc performs much better on the initial start. |
