Hi all. Just posted in the intro section. Figured I'd post up some pics of a little project a good friend of mine asked me to build. It's a log rack...nothing spectacular, but I'm proud of it. I used mig flux core .030 wire and a Hobart handler 125 that's on a dedicated 20amp with 10 gauge.  Material is 1"1/2 square with a 1/8" wall and some 3/16 by 1"1/2 flat bar. Sorry I don't have any close ups of the welds, but did manage to learn a bunch. Espically heat warpage. Wow is that something else  I got the basic plan from someone on here I belive and around the interwebs which appeared to be the same guy I assume. It's 8' (inside the uprights) by 4' tall(inside dimensions) by 14" wide.  Any advice or constructive criticism is welcome. My buddy is more than pleased and I'm waitin on the finished painted pics. This is my first welding project so I'm sure there's stuff I missed or didn't do, but overall it seems to be strong.Last edited by Pidge; 12-26-2014 at 05:46 PM.
Reply:roughly 45' of square and 20' of flat bar.  gettin the basic uprights together.  uprights 80%done.  flatbar in, 95% complete.  getting the horizontals square. Big learning curve here. I had to grind out the first one because of the heat pull.  just a random pic. I had to keep rotating it to do flat welds. I'm anxious to learn vertical so I don't have to flip around work.  hard to tell, but I layed three welds each on the horizontals..just in case (top, bottom, inside
Reply:some hand filing and primer to check the high/low spots.  finished minus paint.  Overall it's been a fun project that got me some $$$ (my friend insisted) and have learned a lot. Hopefully it lasts as I've asked him to put 3 coats on it. It was a fun project, but time consuming. It took me 4 days about 5 hours a day. The filing took a while, but that my own doing as I like stuff square. And constructive criticism? Thanks for looking. Pidge.
Reply:Looks good to me. Until that last picture I was thinking "how freaking long IS this thing?". GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Hahaha Gravel that made me laugh. Thanks for the nice comments. Take care.
Reply:Looks OK to me. Should do the job it's needed for. But if you ever need some 1.5"x 3/16" flat stock, you know where to get it. The horizontal pieces really serve no purpose, except to add weight to the rack, which there should be plenty of when it's loaded. The two vertical pieces add a little visual enhancement, but probably do little for additional strength. But overall, if your buddy is pleased with it and you are too, then it turned out great for a first time project. Will it be on pavement when it's loaded?
Reply:Bistineau: sorry I shoulda added that. Yes the flat bar really dosent add anything, but looks and for the odd smaller piece thrown in. I'm no professional, but did enjoy makin it. As far as where it's going...on a wooden lowere level deck.  Thanks for looking. Pidge.
Reply:Side note, and maybe a new person question, but what do you mean "know where to get flat bar"?
Reply:.030 runs nice on 11ga tubing.  About the max for thin is 14ga with that wire."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Ah gotcha lol. I was also thinking it helps with the odd small piece from not falling thru. Thanks man for having a look. Didn't know that Farmersamm, thanks.   Pidge.
Reply:Thought I'd fire some pics my buddy sent me of the completed rack in action lol. [URL=http://s379.photobucket.com/user/pidgeIam/media/9C137D88-D715-4FFE-8E10-0C80EB3FD378_zpsbvnbr6rf.jpg.html][/URLOverall a good project for me being a new "welder". Thanks for looking. Pidge

Reply:Looks good.should work well if they don't rough house it.  I see a possibility of it bowing out if you put too much weight against the sides. If that happens, it's an easy fix to weld a rail on the backside. PS,wheres all the snow?I think we have more in CT.    sadly..Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:I made a log rack doing a similar method with cutting the tubing at 45s. I made a little bit of money off of it but it wasnt nearly the size of yours. What is the purpose of using the flatbar?
