Commander 500 wont low idle?

My Commander 500 starts on high idle, then tries to go to low idle but kicks right back up to high and stays there. Any ideas on what to look for? Reply:Please post the code number so i can look up the correct diagram.In the mean time make sure there are nod loads on either weld terminals or the power plugs.Shorted diodes or wires. Once we have the code number we can give you some tests. Your problem could be a short, bad solenoid, jammed up linkage or failing PCB.
Reply:Code 10599 Model K-1639-1Hello ccawgc, thanks for the input. I got some tips from Bills Welder Repair, and also I called Lincoln. After talking to Lincoln, I have to first work out some basic issues. He said that the ground connection could cause this. I used a side post battery I just took out of my wifes car. Still good, just old. Well the adapters for the top post cable terminals on the welder do not fit perfectely. So right now I am putting my diagnosing on hold. You see, I can get a group 34 (car) battery, which is what the welder calls for, for $80.00. Or I can get a truck battery from my Mack Trucks dealer, for $75.00. The truck battery is obviously much bigger. I REALLY like the Mack batteries, because whichever company make them for Mack, I feel is the best. I have used them for over ten years in my trucks, heavy equipment and even my light equipment like air compressors and rollers. NEVER had a problem. So now I am in the process of building a skid and I want to try to mount a Mack battery on the skid behind the welder. It will not fit inside the welder so I will have to get a new cable(s) and run them out to the battery.Sorry to ramble, but until I get the skid finished and figure out which battery I will use, I have to wait. Reply:No problem I ramble also some times. I have seen a lot of these with long battery cables. They were connected to a larger battery or to the truck battery they were mounted on.Make sure your battery ground is good. Also check the ground on the idle solenoid.Then if it stills acts up. take the screw out of the face plate and hinge it down. Look for the ground bolt with lots of #5 wires going to it. This is the 12 VDC system ground.Clear all this and get back to us..
Reply:Ok, I finally got a battery in it and I was at my buddies place and told him. He wiggled the wires and it worked. Just dirty terminals. Took off the wires and scraped the terminals with a pocket knife, coated them with di-electric grease and it works very nice. Thanks for all of your offers to help. Reply:Just saw this thread for the first time tonight Stick-man and I'm glad it turned out to be an easy fix.  Obviously ccawgc was spot on with checking connections and after reading your initial post I have to admit my first thoughts were in a slightly different direction.  Always go with the good 'ol K.I.S.S. factor first.  But hey, I appreciate the vote of confidence.
