Question about loud air compressor.

Hey guys, i bought an 80 gallon husky compressor and when i first started it with the empty tank it sounded as if it was knocking pretty loud, the knocking sound seems to subside as the tank gains pressure. is this normal?

Reply:Does it just have a flat fiber intake filter?  If so take it off and see if there  is a threaded port uner it, or a flange with bolts.  Most times the intake silencer on the lower priced compressors is either non existent or extremely marginal.  You couldnt stand to be in the garage when my compressor was running.  I put a intake silencer/muffler on it I got from Grainger and now you can actually have a conversation with someone in the garage while its running.
Reply:I adapted the air filter housing off a B&S lawnmower engine because the chinchy little felt filter got full of paint overspray. I believe some compressors make that sound because of the air being pumped past the check valve. I might be wrong.
