I'm going to be machining some dimple dies. They have A2 tool steel in stock at the metal shop but from research it seems like O-1 is the best for pressing and swaging. Will this A2 work for what I want to do. I'm all about quality so I want something that will last a long time. It will be 1/8" plate so pretty thick as far as dimpling goes....Thanks,JoshMiller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:if you plan to do your own heat-treat on the finished tool,go with O1.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:IMHO, if you are going to use a torch for heat treat, I would use O-1. If you have access to a heat treat furnace and tool wrap, I would use A-2. A-2 will distort less being a air-quench and is a good quality tool steel with better wear then O-1.
Reply:Thanks for the replies. What oil should I use to quench with 0-1 steel?Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:i'd quench with whatever's around . nothing wrong w/ used motor oil ,old hyd fluid , etc . never spent money on quenching oil . it gets nasty and sooty anyway.
Reply:heat the oil before you use it for quenching. and when you dunk the workpiece, stir it around, dont just dip it.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
