Central Machinery mill/lathe combo

My nephew brought over a Central Machinery lathe/mill combo he bought in a box and asked me to make it work again.  I am beginning to wonder if he got all the parts.  The main dovetail section has almost 1/4" gap between the ways, it almost appears there should be some kind of shim in it, but none is with any of the other parts.  There are a couple of round tipped adjustment screws on the trolley, but I find it hard to believe they would be used to take up the entire gap.  Anyone else ever worked on one of these?  Tried to get a picture of it, but didnt come out very good.http://s712.beta.photobucket.com/use...01879436620485Last edited by Comp Chassis; 01-07-2013 at 03:18 PM.

Reply:I second that, sounds like you are misisng the gib. Dont know how hard it would be toi find one of them. You mihgt be able to make one if you can get the dinensions.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.

Reply:Yep, that looks almost exactly how thick the spacer would need to be.  He has more problems than that, he didnt get the table for the cross feed.  The guy he got it from insisted he gave him everything but it is not all there.  Dont know what he paid for it, but hope it wasnt much.

Reply:I would add this type of gib is easier to fabricate if a replacement cant be found.  The set screws provide the pressure against it vs the ways. A better type of gib would be a tapered type which provides an easier more uniform type of adjustment. It is, however, more difficult to fabricate if one cant be purchased.Good luck
