I picked up an Atlas Clausing  lathe tonight. Its a 6 inch, no extras with it, just a basic lathe. I dont have a clue what I bought, but for 50 bucks I took a chance. The guy said he got it from where he worked, it was cool to the touch, and was going to learn how to use it. He never got around to it, so I guess Ill learn how to use it. Model is 10100 and has 3 jaws. So I guess my metal learning has just expanded. Dont know what Ill build with it except the pins for my garden tractor loader, but Im sure Ill have fun learning!Learning one rod at a time

Reply:Several years ago I had a Atlas Clausing Model 10100 lathe. I sold it when I got a great deal on a Logan 14" lathe.Anyway, before I sold it I scanned the operating and parts manual to a pdf file. The file is about 2.5 meg . I should be able to email it to you if you are interested.Tom
Reply:My condolences on your upcoming addiction and related expenses. I know it's been that way since I took a machining class and bought my Clausing 12" lathe.....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Its an Atlas clausing 10100. It did happen, but our main comp crashed and I can post pics. Tom emailed me the manual and I can see Im missing some stuff, but I found some of it on ebay. It dosnt say craftsman on it cause the covers are missing. Its blue everything moves, slides what ever you call it is free and smooth. And its still in the back of the car, and the wife didnt bitch a bit! Learning one rod at a time
Reply:Congrats Vince, on your 'new' lathe, the disease takes hold! Reply:I hope you got the change gears with that.
Reply:What are change gears?Learning one rod at a time
Reply:They are for changing the lead screw speed for cutting threads. If you don't have em it can get very expensive to get a set. Here's a pic of mine with the change gears sitting on the ways Attached ImagesLast edited by Grinsha; 08-13-2012 at 10:33 PM.
Reply:GrinshaIm guessing they are in there, theres a bunch of gears. On another note, theres a pice on your shelf, just above the lamp that I sold on Epay some years back. I was at an auction trying to get a south bend about this same size and I ended up with that pice in a box lot of books and life mag's. I didnt know what it was but I knew it was worth more than the 15 bucks I paid for the lot. It had a small crack on the handle, I should have kept it, but wasnt sure if Id ever get a lathe so I sold it. That one pice paid for the OA set, tap and dies and grinders I bought that day. Reply:Vince, did it come with a bunch of "spare" gears, or just the ones on the machine? I'm not sure from your last comment. If you have the "spares" like Grinsha showed, then you have the change gears. If not, you are locked in to what ever gears they have installed on the machine currently.I'm guessing the piece above the light you are referring to is a milling attachment for the lathe. I've seen one or two, but they aren't common. The guy I bought my Clausing from had made himself one using a cheap  cross slide vise from ENCO that he mounted to a heavy piece of angle he welded up and bolted on in place of the tool post holder. I have a small mill, so I had no interest in one.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVUK-h-0iWQ[/ame].No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:That is a milling attachment. There are around 20 extra gears in a complete set not counting what you have on the lathe now.

As time goes on Ill keep my eyes open at auctions and shows this fall for tooling. Im enjoying that channel mike. And why didnt you answer your phone today? Reply:Extra gears you said?I get those with my Logan 12" but I think they came from a Logan 14'...The 100 and 127 are for metric threading and cost an arm and a leg... Atlas and South bend parts are common and much easier to find used then Logan on EBay.BE WARNED If your spouse gets mad every time you spend a few extra $ for a tool at the Hardware store you already in deep deep sh... You will became addicted to this after the first piece a metal you cut....There is no way out! You need more and more stuff to get the job done...Your nightmare just begins....Get a copy of "Manual of Lathe operation and machinists table's" from Atlas (Clausing) this is a "must have" for you since your friend can't always be there. Reply:He means they can really hurt you if you get complacent or careless. Those spinning jaws will F you up fast if you get a finger or knuckle in them, say when trying to sand or file something. They almost "disappear" when spinning fast and it's easy to over look then and forget just how far they stickout. Also that machine will NOT stop if you scream uncle. They also have a habit of grabbing loose items and sucking you in. Always make sure you are not wearing loose clothing or jewelry. Older lathes don't have the safety shutdowns newer units have where you can hit the panic bar and either disengage the clutch or shut off the power if you get grabbed.Zaps posted up a few picts of when he's gotten sucked in  to his machine on occasion. Last time I think he was sanding a piece and the sand paper wrapped up and sucked him in. Time before that I think it was his shirt and it luckily ripped it off his body.Edit: It was his boss that got sucked in with the sand paper..http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...lathe+accidentHere's one of his posts about getting grabbed by his lathe...http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p=40552&postcount=13And a few more..two posts on a girl at Yale that was killed by a lathe.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...lathe+accidenthttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ht=lathe+shirtLast edited by DSW; 11-10-2012 at 07:57 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Safety:Keep  SHIRT SLEEVES ROLLED ABOVE THE ELBOW or wear Tee-shirts.  NO watches, rings, bracelets, jewelry, neckties, western bolo ties, shop apron strings tied in front, or anything else that dangles or could touch any part of that machine while operating it.  There are lots of exposed moving parts, not just the spindle and workpiece.  A dangling apron string can get caught in the leadscrew and suck you in faster than you can realize and react. Next your shirt is in the spinning work piece and disaster is well uunder way. Anything getting caught in the spinning chuck or workpiece drags the victim in faster than a speeding bullet.Lathe accidents are often grotesque, even for very small lathes. And watch for those chips flying off or spiraling up off the bit.  They are HOT and the small chips fly fast!  Wear safety glasses or face shield.- MondoLast edited by Mondo; 11-10-2012 at 08:21 AM.Reason: computer error - I was still typing.Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:And try to stay out of line with the spinning bits.  Yesterday I got a few hours in the garage, so I built a drawbar to try out my collet set for the first time.  I then used them to try some milling on the lathe.  One pass, nice and easy with a 3/8" endmill, but It was a long endmill and I felt a larger endmill would allow less flex. I swpaped collets and endmills for 5/8" and was going very nicely though a piece of steel and all of the suden the whle tool post swiveled 10 degrees shattering the cutting endge off of the endmill and outwards.  Luckily I wear some safety glasses that are more like half face shields than glasses, but the small pieces of shattered metal hit me in the neck like small needles. Very scary, I kept wiping my neck making sure there  was no serious cut.miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
