Welding practice fixture?

Having never been to welding school I don't know how they hold their practice plates.Does anyone have a picture or anything of a stand to hold plates in 45 degree, vertical, overhead position etc?Thanks,Pete

Reply:Thanks guys. I didn't know exactly what it was called but now I know.I like the one fixed to the welding table in the image above. I'll probably make something I can clamp to the table.How high are the plate supposed to be positioned when your doing an overhead test? Is it over your head or above eye level or something else?
Reply:For our Boilermakers common arc test I believe the plate just has to be over your head. If you like to spread your legs a bit for more stability you can drop it lower. I don't think height so much matters. If the plate is parallel to the ceiling, and your welding the underside of the plate, the weld is overhead. I haven't taken the plate test for quite a few years since taking tube tests but I want to say I had it a couple inches above my head when standing straight up. Just put it somewhere comfortable for you. You can position the plates where you want. Once you have it where you want it and begin the test it can't be moved at all.
