Ok, doing a butt weld however there is a c-shaped channel right where most of the weldment would be.  Soooo, this is what I did to span the channel and give more area to ensure a better joint.I used two pieces of 1/4" mild steel that fit the channel perfectly in height.  I intended to weld one first and then the other on top of it filling the channel.  I drilled holes in both so I could do plug welds when I secured each piece to the main workpiece.  I will weld one first: ends, top and bottom and then the plug welds to give more strength overall.  Then I will weld the second piece with the plug welds offset from the others. My question is:  I there a better way to fill the channel?Photos are out of order but you can understand the proper sequence. After the channel is filled then the crossmember will be move into place si it can be butt welded at a 90-degee angle.Last edited by wannab1; 03-18-2015 at 09:55 PM.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:If it's possible to cope the crossmember to fit the channel, it would be the best way to go."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Farmer, I agree.  However, I don't have the machinery to perform those kinds of cuts so I was trying to obtain the most metal-to-metal contact in the best manner I could think of.  I did not know if there was a better way (other than your suggestion). Thanks for the feedback.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A

Reply:Farmer, I did not think of that...great idea!  I'll do that.KillD, definitely I will do that to get better penetration.  My 'root' welds have been 6010 / 6011.  I have ground them down and then filled with 7018.  While I have a few remaining 6011 sticks when I run out I'll just be using 7018.This contraption is going to be a "land leveler" something you drag behind a tractor or ATV to smooth out high spots and fill in low spots in the ground...like for a dirt or gravel driveway. It will look like a ladder with two runners on the sides and three 'blades' in between them. Thanks!I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
