I have a recently acquired ranger 9 with the Onan p218 and it ran fine then sat over the winter and due to a leaking exhuast manifold some water got into the engine. It was run for a few seconds before the water was discovered. The oil was changed for fresh and i have run compression tests on both sides and got about 115. It will start up and run fine and clean for about 5 seconds and then it will die. Any ideas on possible problems.
Reply:The oil seems to be getting diluted with fuel. The carb is dumping fuel in while its trying to start not sure if this is normal seems to flood it and therefore doesnt start everytime. Dont have much experience with this engine. any help is appreciated
Reply:You may want to very carefully disassemble the carb. and clean it out.Your float seat may stuck open. You might get lucky and only have to take the top off.Soak it up in spray carb. cleaner then blow it out. Make sure the float is not stuck and put it back together. be careful not to loose any springs and parts.
Reply:I just recently went through the same thing with mine Ranger 8 Onan P216...i just took the top off the carb and cleaned the bowl out with carb cleaner...pulled the jet and cleaned it and pulled the float assembly and cleaned it and all back together and running fine.Just becarefull not to damage the carb top gasket when pulling it,i was surprised at how easily mine came off and wasn't dry rotted .
