Ranger 8 control knob removal

I have a late 90's or so Lincoln Ranger 8 225 i have had for about 10 years now,i recently cleaned the carb on the Onan Performer 16 engine since it started idling and running bad from gas sitting in it too long... and now just trying to clean it up with new paint.I have the panels removed and painting,and will be ordering a new control panel since mine is so sun faded its hard to read.I know the fine tune control knob has an inset allen screw,but on the other 2 knobs it has none and seems they are supposed to just pull off with a little pressure,i tryed it with small pry bars applying even pressure to pull them off,but i am in fear of either breaking the knobs or worse yet,breaking the internels they are connected to..Anyone ever done this yet on these Rangers and maybe a proper technique to get them off??
Reply:Lincoln makes two types of pointer knobs. One uses a Philips head screw as a set screw. The other has just a slot on the other end from the point. insert a small flat screw driver into the slot and push. There is a hook on the switch shaft that you have to push in to release the knob. You cab always take your code number and call lincoln and ask them.
Reply:Thanks..mine must be the type with the hook on the shaft...there is no type of set screws on my pointer knobs at all,just on the fine adjustment knob.I decided to hold off on buyin the new control panel because i am getting swamped with people wanting some work done and can't hold off on passing up the money .....and on top of that....i think my voltage regulator/rectifier went bad becuase it won't charge the battery and while running i pulled a battery cable off and it shuts the engine down, so it's not charging at all,gettin a voltage meter tommorow and doing a diagnostic check but i'm pretty sure thats what it is since it seems to be a real common failure on them.I know its not the battery..it's only 6 months old and i pulled the brand new battery out of my Husq. riding mower and it killed that too when running for a while.
Reply:How to troubleshoot the battery charge depends on the age of the welder and what engine is in it. the code number will tell us. If you engine has a battery charger on the fan cover of the engine. Check for a short in the stator to ground, and then look for stator voltage and then battery change voltage. A short from the stator to ground will kill the battery charger.Get the code and we can can help you better.
Reply:I ran a quick test after chargin the battery,tested the battery terminal with a volt meter and its only 12.68 volts while running and shut off..so it aint charging,it should be somewhere above 14 volts while running.The rectifier even says 14v and 20 amp on it.Its a 1995-1998 Onan P216G 1/11406G engine..Performer series,i got idea of the years because it has a sticker on it about being federal compliant from 1995-1998 .I'll do a bunch of checking connections and grounds in the morning..i found a few places to download the service and parts manuals for these for free tonight and it gives details on how to diagnose and check the charging system to whats wrong...most likely the rectifier(voltage regulator) since i see all over the internet of how common these go out on them.Mine is still young in life..just a lil over 400 hours on the clock ,i bought it about 5 years ago from a buddy who gave up a 4x4 truck racing bussiness for 1200.00 with only 213 hours on it.It mostly sat around untill needed for some stick welding around the house on frames,trailer..etc and used a few times as generator backup when power went out in the house.I'm soon retiring from the Ironworkers International and getting some side things goin for extra money here and there..plus building a shop to restore and ProMod old cars and trucks to sell....so....i need it now more than ever because i have a bunch of people breathing down my neck wanting me to do alot of custom work on alot of trailers and trucks right now..lolI'll do a few tests in the morning and report back the results..if it is the rectifier,the nearest Cummins/Onan dealer is over an hour from me and i called all over and they are the nearest who has it and they said 68.00!!....i found quite a few online brand new for 30.00 to 40.00 shipped to my door..so that'll be the route i go if i need it.Thanks for the reply and help

Reply:Did the test on it today according the manual..the rectifier is bad...Ordering 1 online for 33.00 shipped to my door as compared to anywhere else wanting 50.00-70.00 for the same exact thing..lolThe Local Cummings/Onan dealer wanted 72.00 + tax..they asked if they should hold on to it for me...yea i'll be right there....not...Lincoln Ranger 8 225Lincoln 180 ProMigMiller Maxstar 200DXInternational Ironworkers Local 70930+ years and counting
Reply:Happens once in a great while but not very often that TJ gets beat on Onan parts prices if in fact the $33 piece is genuine Onan.  I get decent pricing from the local Onan distributor on things needed in a hurry or if TJ doesn't have it but a typical Cummins/Onan shop - forget it!!!.Good to hear you got it figured out.
