Im still in school and I just started a jon with great northern pipe and utilities as a pipe welder. I will be getting all my certifications for 8 states. I picked up real quick with it but still have troubles in a few places. Im looking to get a few tips here and there to help me expand. Like what are some ways to help see better, helmets, transitions from vertical to overhead. Anything will help! Thank you!
Reply:If you're doing high caliber pipe welding, an auto hood / lens will make life easier on you. Arc strikes outside the weld zone will get you run off.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Pipe welding equals practice x 1000. Try to get in a position so you can look at where you're welding. Sometimes you have to experiment to find the most comfortable position. For tests clamp a vice grip on the end of the pipe to rest you arm against to help steady your stinger hand. I was told to always try to keep your rod pointed towards the middle of the pipe. Loop the cable over your shoulder and have enough slack so it's easier to transition to different positions. Is it downhill pipe welding? That's about the only time you'd transition from vertical to overhead.
Reply:I looked like Barry Bonds when I welded pipe. Armored right up. Auto Hood sure, but Pipeliners are still in use for a reason. I made 10' stingers out of smaller gauge wire to lighten the load on your arm/shoulder. Chain clamps make good arm rests. Try to stay humble, confidence is good but if your mouth writes checks your puddle cant cash.....Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:Auto hoods do help with arc strikes but I would say I weld better with a quality glass lens.  The most popular auto lens around here is the journeymen vhtls. If it is pipeline or downhill there is a reason the sugar scoop and pancake are so popular. The speedglass and nexgen guys will hate on me but they don't hold up and seam to let more sparks in on the ol melon. Other than that practice enough and you can do it with out looking. Reply:I have an auto hood but im still having trouble seeing my bevel. Even with the shade at 10. All the guys I talk to say I have to feel it, its sorta hard when.ive never welded pipe haha. This is the first joint I did. All 6010 5p+, 1/8 120 amps . root, hot, and 2 fillers.  some inside shots
Reply:Are you having a hard time seeing your bevel on start-up or while welding? I had an AD hood and I had a hard time seeing the bevel and positioning my start-up with the hood down when the light was low, like in my garage. So I picked up a pipeliner and an making myself learn that way. What was your set-up here, bevel, gap and land?SeanMiller CST 280Lincoln 210 MP
Reply:While welding, if I pull the electrode away from the metal I can see but slag gets trapped. I was welding 4 1/2 inch sch. 80 I believe. 1/8 landing, 32.5 bevel, and 1/16 gap
