engine driven welder

I am looking at getting a engine welder for around the house. I have some pipe fence I need to build and some other work that I can use it for just general repair and ranch work. Nothing major. Also want it so I have power for when it goes out at my house.I am looking at Lincoln ranger 250 and miller bobcat 250. Are these going to be the machine I should be looking at? Or what is the more popular machine. I have a hobart engine welder now at my rental store but do not want to have to bring it home every time I need to use it. thanksWalter

Reply:I think the 305 is more of a welders welder. I think the better money is the 225 250 though. Rebates are open on those machines.

Reply:I have been talking to the guys at Lincoln and waiting on them to get back with me on a price. The 305 looks like a great machine. Just think that might be too much machine for me.  Mostly what I will be doing is fence work around my house and probably some work at my cabin on my boat dock and the building over my fire pit.thanksWalter

Reply:As for using it as a house gen, my house is pretty small around 1000 sq ft. and I do not have central air and heat. Only window units. If the power goes out I will run a cord to the pellet stove, a lamp, and my  freezer. So even the 225 size machine would work for the power side. Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming.Walter

Reply:Beware of Chopper Technology, it's expensive when it goes **** up.Was at my LWS a month or so back, and a doood was buying a new engine drive welder instead of fixing the old one that had Chopper Technology.  Apparently it was more cost effective to buy a new welder, or so I heard.The Ranger 250GXT, which I own, pretty much does it all for farm use.  AC/DC welding.  10,000 watts continuous generator power, runs a suitcase feeder, will do TIG if you spend a ton of money for the add-on crap, and does small electrode carbon gouging very well.  And it's cheaper.  They can be had for less than this http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...ncolnElectric), and are a good investment, least in my opinion.  Mine's a few years old, and still performs like new.  Burns about 1 1/2gph when running full out as a generator."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I like my 302 TRAILBLAZER . Had a power failure last week when it was -7 and -30 wind chill. Cranked up the 302 and it saved the night. Power did resume after 3 hours. It was funny when the neighbors called when they saw my lights on.  IF you get a Lincoln, you could always hide it under a Miller cover.

Reply:A Dynasty is a fantastic Tig welding machine! Almost made a Tig welder out of me, almost. But far as SMAW the Dynastys flat suck.
