HiI was pondering whether the following could conceivably be possible. :Using a rod / filler / coater metal with a much lower melting temperature than the base metal to 'braze' a thin layer coating over the base metal parts. Think electrolysis type of coating, but done manually, with a tig torch. You'd have to 'colour it in' to coat the whole surface. Hypothetically, the inert gas should be helpful in preventing oxidation that would otherwise happen if you got a part hot enough to have some coating metal wick and float thinly onto it's surface. I'm sure that not knowing the answer to this ponderance boils down to not knowing how the filler material is melted in tig welding. Is it done by the arc itself, or residual heat from the puddle when it comes into contact with that molten patch (conductive heat)? When a flame is used as the energy source for brazing, a flux is usually used to aid / facilitate wetting. It's maybe a separate question, but since this brazed-coating thing has me thinking about it (for enhancing the spread of a 'brazed' coating), i wonder if it's ever possible to use flux with a GTAW scenario style brazing?  The fluxes i know of all have temperature ratings, so i suppose nothing would hold up to the tig arc temperature?

Reply:Hi B C.No specific project in mind. I'm just wondering about the possibilities. But lets say i wanted to brass or bronze coat a forged steel wrench. Or produce some piece of jewelry, or a pen, in mild or stainless steel and then silver plate it. Or grind a kiradashi (knife) out of an old bastard file and coat the handle part in a metal admixture that wouldn't rust. Or slightly increasing the diameter of some or other shaft (similar to the way that metal spray does). Or cover some metal that can't be directly chrome plated in a thin layer of a metal that can bond to the chrome. Or you have three old brass coat hooks and one iron one that's exactly the same shape but not brass, and you want to make a 4 hook coat rack with all hooks matching in appearance. Whatever the purpose, it's a coating and not a joint.Spreading the coating metal as thinly as it will flow. So the coating covering the complete surface area would be as much thinner than a welding bead as it is thicker than an electro-plated layer.
Reply:Eutectic, Rockmount, etc.--have dozens of oxy-acetylene torch spray-on metal coatings, for build up, overlay,hard facing---that's a proven, available technology.Blackbird
Reply:Thanks Dave.If i were going to do this hypothetical coating thing, especially industrially, i'm sure i'd buy into some or other well established process. Like electroplating. But i'm only pondering possibilities here, trying to learn and think outside the box. Plus, if we're talking about actually doing what i'm wondering about, on a small scale like once-off, then in terms of availability my tig torch is right here not three meters away.
