Reply:Not a bad price for an AC/DC stick machine. It's on the lower end of what I see listed regularly. It certainly looks clean. You'll probably have to wait quite a while to see something that clean at less money. He sounds like he might take less to clear it out, so make him an offer and see what he says. Those were made by Century like so many other store brands. Only minor issue is occasionally the sliding shunt will get stuck if it rusts or is used and never reset to other positions. Looking at that unit I seriously doubt that would be the case with that machine. Just see if the machine adjusts. If it doesn't, don't force it! It's not hard to free up if you pull the cover, but if you force it you'll bend the levers. It's dead simple and there's almost nothing inside that goes wrong with those. Sight unseen I'd buy it knowing I could get it to work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Hello winginit, if your going to ask about a machine and if it is any good, first let us know a little more about what your using the machine for? If your just getting into welding and need a basic machine for learning it's a good machine to start on. It does have DC as well as AC voltage capabilities which is good being it gives you versatility in learning the differences in polarity of arc welding. The price on the machine is pretty good, if your going to consider buying it when you speak to the owner ask if anything comes with it( helmet, electrodes or chipping hammer) also see if you can test it out. I know he said it works but you need to try it out before you hand over your hard earned cash. Hope this helps BW54Last edited by Basicwelder54; 05-08-2016 at 11:16 PM.

Reply:That's a nice machine and looks very clean. It's equivalent to the AC/DC Lincoln so-called "Tombstone"model. As a transformer machine, the only parts that might cause a problem sometime would be the rectifier diodes, but that's not really likely and they are replaceable anyway. I'd jump on that for the price.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set

Reply:Originally Posted by winginitThanks for the advice,  he said he sold it, but i think i may have pissed him off because i offered him $300......  But i just dont think paying more than 1/2 for anything used is a good idea. at more than 50% of price than new i would rather pay and get the warranty.

Reply:i just called in it and left a message,    can this be fixed if ever broke ?
Reply:i just got off the phone with him,   he said he has all the leads and it looks like brand new,  he did say ARC was not ideal for body work more for big stuff is that correct ?  i still may grab it   ......    its 150 miles from my house.   i see lots of Lincoln 225 ARC welders close are they about the same thing ?  thanks
Reply:Thin sheet with stick is difficult. 16 ga is doable with lots of practice. 14 ga  or 1/8" can be done by most newer welders with some practice. Thicker isn't an issue. Thinner is really mig territory. Exhaust can be done if they are slip joints as you are doubling the thickness and that makes it a bit easier..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The Old Idealarc 250 AC/DC is a great machine if you can locate one at a decent price. They tend to sell somewhat higher than the average old welder due to the quality and reliability. The Lincoln 225 Welder is very common. If you can find an AC/DC model they are more versatile than the standard AC only version. I found this one on Craigslist a couple of years ago for $200. It's a great arc welder. Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:Try to get the cables with it, a good set can cost several hundred dollars. I have a Century similar to yours in 250 amp AC/DC. It's been a good welder so far, I payed $100.00 for it used with 50 feet of stinger and ground cables.Last edited by kctgb; 05-09-2016 at 11:21 PM.
Reply:thanks folks,  i am leaning towards the lincoln tombstone like you guys are showing.   they seem to be lots of them around.  i still need a mig but for a couple hundred bux i can get the 225 ac/dc arc
Reply:how about this set up ?  he said the leads and plug are extra long and works great.    https://albany.craigslist.org/tls/5537554219.html
Reply:Your original one was better. That Craftsman had infinitely adjustable settings. The Lincoln you just showed has tapped settings, so you have fixed amp points like say 90 amps, 110 amps, 125 amps etc. You can usually find a tap setting that is close to what you want, but they aren't always optimal. With that Lincoln you can't go up or down a few amps if you need to. To me they want too much for that Lincoln. Now the round topped Lincoln that GNM posted up in post 15 is different. That round handle in the center would allow you to infinitely adjust your amps and it's a heavy industrial class machine. If you could find an Idealarc like that, it's worth every penny of $350, but I have seen them sell for less. The one he posted below is the same as is in that CL add.If you added your location to your profile so we knew where you were located, someone might be able to point you towards something to look at..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I second what DSW just said. If you want s good stick welder, keep looking for an old round top Idealarc 250. They are dependable as gravity and will last a hobby welder a lifetime. My partner and I buy and resell them. We never got one, no matter how rough the looked that  wouldn't weld.
