I am looking for a horizontal band saw for shop and while searching through sites for used commercial models JET brand appeared several times. My budget is 1200 to 1800 and I can purchase a new JET brand for the price of a heavier used model.Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with brand?I appreciate any input, can't find much in the way of reviews anywhere.
Reply:Jet is a good brand, though Chinese made.  I have a 1993 vintage vertical, and a much newer horizontal.  I really like them both.  -AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:I have the N/Tool version....with a good blade... it cuts perfect every time. Some days I have it running all day only stopping to reset another cut.... I recommend it for sure... but it really depends on what YOU are going to use it for... hobby/ home use, light -medium duty fab shop, or high production/heavy cutting etcLincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:Appreciate the input guys, leaning towards 7*12 model. For the price and available features the saw looks like a good buy.I know that for less than $2000 I am really limited as far as new equipment but saw should handle what I need it to do, mostly .250" square tube and smaller mild steel.I am going to hold out a little longer to stay in the market for a used HE&M or Ellis but if I can't find anything (soon!) I'll go with JET.Thanks again for advice.
Reply:intraining,Keep looking through all the assorted sellers of this type of machine as most are rebadged and you may as well pay the lowest price for the same machine. With Jet, and I own a couple, you are definately paying for a name and paint!  Generally, the closest match to Jet's designs, or at least the designs Jet sells, is Grizzly. So, if green will get you there over dirty white, usually you can save some money by going Grizzly. More of a saving might be attained by going with some other re-seller, but Grizzly can usually be depended upon to have the same level of quality control as Jet...which may not be true of some of the other re-sellers.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:After looking at Grizzly's models, it seems they offer more saw for lower price.I have learned to not buy on price alone,ie you get what you pay for, but overall design of JET and Grizzly are really close if not identical.I am still following up on some used American Made saws but I need one soon and, as I said, I can't justify paying 5-7K on a new saw right now and most likely will end up getting a Griz or JET.Thanks wyoray for info 'bout JET rebadging!!
Reply:If it is any help as far as the similarity of Jet and Grizzly equipment goes, I asked my machine tool dealer when I purchased my Jet lathe if there was a difference between the Jet model and the Grizzly. His reply, "None." Basically he is correct, although there are a few subtle differences relating to minor bells & whistles differences offered by one or the other. Major, and most minor, components can be sourced from whichever supplier has cheaper parts available...read Grizzly in most every case.I used to own a larger Grizzly horz. band saw. Metal cutting marvel, but when I found a larger Ellis for sale down in Denver the Grizzly found a new home in a friend's shop for half price...which paid for most of the used Ellis. Wish I could saw the same thing about the nine blades I tossed in free to sweeten the deal...Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:jet's are really "inexpensive" clones of tried and true older designs. i have one in my iron shop and it's great. i use it constantly and it still cut's square. the only very small problem is the blade sometimes wanders a little and rubs on top between the power and idler wheels but that part is made to be easily replaced. it's just a short piece of sheet metal with a 90 deg. bend held with two hand bolts. imvhoi.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:For the sort of money you're looking to spend you could buy a used real band saw that was built in the USA. Marvel, doall, Johnson... All easy to find for under $1000. Can imagine why yor want to buy a disposable "new" saw.   I wouldn't trade my '62 Johnson for 5 new import saws. Wouldn't trade my '43 DoAll vertical for any number of new saws.Syncrowave 300Maxtron 450, S-52E, 30A
Reply:Doall saws are decent saws. But I don't own one, I only Trajan saws. Marvel bandsaw are great too.PlasmaCam CNC cutterLathe and Band SawClamps
