This is going to be my first welding project. I bought a 4x4 sheet of 3/8 steel for my welding table, and this thing weighs around 250lbs. For the legs I have 1.5x1.5 1/8 square tubing. My plan is to box the under side of the table top and box the bottom of the table (for a shelf) with this tubing also. Additionally, there will be cross braces (one to two for the top and bottom) using this tubing, and I have eight 6x6 triangles that I'll use as gussets. So the question stands.... Are these 1.5x1.5 1/8 legs stout enough for the task? Or do I have to go back to the steel yard and get some 2x2? This will be a light duty table for a basic home shop...I don't foresee anything too heavy sitting on this table. I also don't want it collapsing on me. It'll be on casters too, so there shouldn't be any huge lateral forced from being dragged around.Last edited by maroast; 04-05-2015 at 01:01 AM.
Reply:You should be fine. Each leg is only going to see something like 75 lbs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Well, I did all my measurements, and I don't have enough 1.5x1.5. So I guess it's back to the yard anyway for some 2x2. Thanks anyway.
Reply:I used 3x3x1/4 angle for legs. Its a small table but has had some heavy loads on it.Also has a slotted top for clamping work pieces. |
