Hello all:Has anyone been successful in transferring .030 Solid Wire from one plastic spool to another? I have a brand new 12.5lb spool of L56 with one flange broken loose from the hub. I also have an empty 8" plastic spool that I am hoping to transfer the wire to. Holding it together with duct tape for now to keep it from going all over the garage.I have a lathe that I can use a spindle to mount the empty spool on and rig another spindle for the broken one to mount on. Then, rotating the lathe chuck by hand transfer the wire. Thinking about using 1.5" Schedule 40 black pipe for spindles. Lathe won't run less than 150rpm, way scarey fast for this task.I know that I will not be able to get the precise layering that was on the original spool before UPS broke it. Reply:My gut feeling is you will have feeding issues unless you are VERY careful in how the wire is layered.Does your lathe have back gear?

No it is a 10 x 22 Grizzly G0602 so no back gear like a Logan, etc. I guess it will be a long process getting the layers even close but since I am cheap and my time is free, will start to work on the supports I need for the spools. I think I can adapt his idea to what I have available here. I had looked at using 33# spools in my HF-171 but that was a non-starter. Just not enough room. Large spools sure are cheaper than same weight of smaller spools. Thanks to all. I now have to get to work on implementing a solution. Take care. Reply:I tried it. My son dropped a brand new friggin spool. I was pissed. It cost over 100bucks. I finally just threw the whole friggin spool in the trash because the more I tried the more mad I got. Reply:I think for a bigger spool like that it would be questionable if it would feed properly. Do we know how the rewound 2lb spools worked on a spool gun that's only feeding the wire 4". If the wire isn't wound with a consistent tension it won't feed properly through a 10-15' gun. I guess you have nothing to lose except time if it doesn't work.
Reply:Only have a 6ft lead on the HF-171 so that may help. As to time, got lots of that now that it above 32F in the garage, I can spend more time there. Reply:Can you make a claim through UPS that the item delivered was damaged?
Reply:Depending on how bad the flange is broken-I wound just repair the flange! Many ways to do this, depending on your flange. |
