The kid across the street came to me to ask if I can weld this, the welding isn't the issue its more along the lines of the filler to be used, and the prep. I know I need to groove out the cracks and grind the area clean. It is chrome plated.Any help is appreciated. Attached ImagesMiller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:looks pretty thin...silicon bronze tig works well for me on the thin nonstructural stuff. done lots 2 stroke pipe repairs with it
Reply:309 should work just fine

Reply:I've had good results on chrome plated mild steel bike exhausts using filler for mild steel and the O/A welder, but that was on chinese low quality exhausts. Owner managed to break one again straight away, but in another place 2" from my repair - he had lowered the bike and didn't pay attention to the rear wheel hitting the exhaust. Since your repair will be around a mounting point some reenforcement might be in order, it should barely be visible with the exhaust back on the bike.
Reply:Factory Harley touring bikes have a problem of cracking like that, where the front cylinder pipe meets the rear cylinder pipe right behind the rear cylinder.I have welded many of them last few years and never had one come back...so far....I have not seen any of the newer ones do it-the ones with cats built in, but that doesn't mean they don't also crack...I just haven't seen any in my shop..........Anyway, I simply flapped the chrome off, clamped the crack closed, then welded them all with my small mig using ER70S6 .030 wire and C-25....Then reinstalled the heat shields and off they rode, never to return with a new crack.Look also to see if that pipe is lacking proper support in other areas....Or if it cannot expand and contract with heat/cold properly.
Reply:It's sheet steel. Just clamp it, tack it, and tig it with 70s-2, 309, or 312. Should take 10 minutes and be a friend to the kid.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I usually weld stuff like that with whatever stainless mig wire I have in my Lincoln.  Not much prep either.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
