Garage is 50' from house and there is still a lot of (wait for it...) aluminum wiring including the gargage (sigh).  So nothing other than 120v there.   As I rent, not gonna dump coin on re-wiring, so am forced to pick up either an older century (100A, Ac only), or a good ole (dare I say it) Hf 80A inverter machine.   The only issue I am having is they are both about the same price!    HAAALLLPPP!!!!
Reply:How far is the electrical panel from the garage? Add a 50 amp 240 volt receptacle close to the panel and get a 75 or 100 foot extension cord to run a welder. Cost to install the recepticle is minimal.  The extension cord is tours to take with you when you move and there's a LOT of aluminum wiring out there.Eventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication".  P.S. I edit almost every post because because I'm posting from my phone and my fingers sometimes move faster than my brain.
Reply:Depends on what you want to do. I run my ahp Tig off 115v all day long. Has plenty of power for the work I do. Reply:how's the 110 going to the garage??? Both spark makers you mentioned will drain lots of 110 from 50 ft away.may want to consider making a 220 extension cord from your stove or dryer circuit...just don't cook or dry close while welding
Reply:Make a 240V cheater.  Not recommended, but they work."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Why not just find a good used medium duty gas powered portable welder. Then if you move you can sure take it with you.                                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Problem solved that is why the original buzz boxes where 180 amps for farms drew 37 amps 220 volt REA 40 amp max.Cheat a little run a 40 amp breaker for a 225 welder.
Reply:Whatever you do, skip the HF 80 amp inverter.  Only good for stuff like yard art and light yard art at that.
Reply:Why not get one of the dual voltage DC stick welders.  Mine performs very well on 120v and is very competitive to the HF 80 amp unit when you factor in the cost of small diameter electrodes and added cost for extended warranty.  As for features, there is no comparison. A dual voltage unit is vastly superior.
Reply:I made a 120v do all cord for my 30 amp welder circuit just before I left the states. I installed a L5-30 receptacle on my out side panel and made a 75 foot 10gauge 3 conductor cord with L5-30p with a 5-20 duplex receptacle and L5-30r on the other end.Gives me all 105 amps out of my little 120v transformer tig no problem.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
