Odd question

I'm a rig welder living in PA and have been thinking a lot about heading up to Canada to work. I'm curious as to what type of red tape I need to go thru to be eligible. Has anyone ever done this and if so what we're the requirements and/or complications? Thanks yall.

Reply:Ft McMurray is where the money is. I've stayed in quite a few of the ft Mac oil sands construction camps. Most of the camps are decent but there are still a few bad ones in operation (old camps). There's nothing wrong with the food, the food is good in most ft Mac camps. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to get workers there. There was a massive forest fire in ft Mac area around the fist of May, it burned 25% of the city and the adjacent oil sands sites are still shut down as is all the construction projects. Things should be ramping back up by the beginning of June. I'm a Ft Mac worker myself. To weld in Alberta you will need a work visa and a Canadian social insurance number so you can pay the Feds income tax. You will also need a clean criminal record check including no DWI's. You will also require a journeyman certificate in the welding trade. Then you will require your structural or pressure welding tickets depending on what  field you will be welding in. That's the bare minimum. Most sites/companies will want you to pass a drug and alcohol test also. In Alberta they don't keep you around if you have too many repairs with your welds. I wouldn't be to sure of anything in the Fort Mac area starting up in the near future, Suncor layed off over 1000 workers last week, I have a buddy that worked there, doesn't expect to be back this year.
Reply:There's plenty of work still happening in Ft Mac. Suncor has 3 different sites in the ft Mac area.
