i know it sounds  mundane ,  but  i'm looking for something more tactile than dikes to trim wire stickout while wearing welding gloves.tried spring-loaded pliers , but still too clumsy and i drop them half the time ,which means having to put down my mig gun and half the time losing a rickety,jig-less setup.any thoughts or ideas ?Miller S60 feederCobramatic push/pull feederMiller CP-252tsLincoln Tig250/Tig250Lincoln weldpak 100 -italianC-H 90A- italianHarris & Victor O\Afull manual & CNC machine shop

Reply:Second on the Welpers. Even the probably Chicom ones from Forney work well for me...$8-$10. If it was TIG filler I'd say go with Knipex mini bolt cutters. In that case it doesn't pay to go cheap as the other like designed cutters I've tried have all been bad imitations.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:MIG pliers, aka whelpers (welding helpers).Has wire cutters to trim the wire, plier tips to grab smallish things and also clean out the gas nozzle of 'crud', a circular plier jaw section to tighten/loosen MIG tips, etc, etc.Handy tool.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:I see my dad doing this a lot.....Run the wire out about 4 inches and fold it back.It bends right at the tip, or face of the nozzleAnd I have seen guys arc it on the bottom of the table ( do this on my table I will kick you) my dad was also doing this a lot and I told him to quit or go weld somewhere else.  that's when he started the folding trick. The folding trick leave stubs at the beginning on the welds that have to be picked off. That's why I use welpers
Reply:Oh and better gloves so you can hold the welpers with ease

Reply:No one has mentioned them yet so I'll say mig pliers also known as welpers.Actually, the reason I'm responding is, I found a small pouch with a belt clip to go on a tool belt.  It has a pretty large magnet on the outside.  It is strong enough that it holds the mig pliers and they are always right there on my hip.

Reply:FWIWBought these and have used em for 5 years, purchased them at the welding store on 41 in Cobb County, Plybar I think is the Miller store name. They are good quality cut very clean first time every time. Seen and used freinds HF and Northern tool brands and they are CHEEP junk dull real quick.  When I weld they are in the back pocket, I trim the wire for every weld. As to stick out easy one, angle the pliers at 45  to the torch cup clip! perfect every time no brainer, about 20 beans.Cheers, Greg Attached ImagesLast edited by pepi; 03-02-2013 at 12:33 PM.

Reply:@ dbotos - klassic! Jaws from MoonRaker. Wonder if he uses anti-spatter in between cuts, and how many amps is needed to weld with IPS 6x19 wire? LOL brah."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:run out a couple extra inches and clip it off with the ground clamp, just lay the wire over the edge of the clamp and bump the trigger, the tail will usually pull off the clamp pretty easily.Wire snips for me. I find that holding the inverted cutting head against the cup gives me just about the right stick out.

Reply:Why carry welpers when mig pliers cut just fine and have multiple purpose. They have notches for contact tips and the nozzle? Not to mention the work pretty good at cleaning splatter out of the nozzle too

Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeThats what the guys at work do, but they never break the wire off and the ground clamp looks like a porcupine. Then when I wiggle them all off there's a hundred razor sharp little tack welds all over the clamp  and for the guys that bend the wire back over the cup a few inches and just start welding, wait till you have no gloves on and someone asks you to hold something quick while they tack it and you get a four inch piece of glowing red wire across your hand youll see how quick you wanna elbow someone in the face

Reply:I bought a pair of those welpers and got into the habit of clipping the wire after every bead (unless I can move it from one bead to another while still hot). Makes for much better arc starts (sharp point should help I guess). The bad news is that I must have bought a cheapo (out of my WLS so it shouldn? because now it has a few dull spots which don't cut the wire at all. Maybe someone (could be me... duh...) use them as wire cutters for something other than welding wire. Anyway. I will probably shop online for a brand name one... and expect it to last longer.Mikel
