Hey all!   I'm at a point with my weekend DIY welding/fabrication projects that I need a chop saw.  Nobody on my Bubba List (local DIY guys that I borrow tools/equipment from that I don't have) has a chop saw capable enough to handle 1/4" metal. The problem is all of the choices makes my head spin.  Anyway, I'm probably never going to be working with anything over 1/4" mild steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.  My budget is around $250.  But I found this Rage 2 chop saw for a few dollars more that got good reviews within the scope of my work projects ($265).  However, I open to your take on other choices, before I make a purchasing decision in the next couple of weeks.  Thanks, in advance, for your opinions!http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...rr#reviewsWrapAgape GuyEverlast Power I-MIG 200 (dual voltage)Everlast PowerArc 200 stickHarbor Freight Titanium 125 Easy FluxHypertherm Powermax 30Way too many power tools
Reply:Menards had this saw on sale for 199.99 a couple of weeks ago.I did see this on the sears site.http://www.searsoutlet.com/d/product...zipChange=true  I have it, I think it is worth the money for a couple hundred. I had to add some thin shims for it to cut square. The Milwaukee and dewalt are nicer but 200.00 MORE.
Reply:It's a good saw with a good solid base. 199.99 is a GOOD deal!

Reply:Wow, I just checked the cost of the blades and forget it!! I think I may just get a good circular saw which cuts metal with those affordable Irwin-brand steel cutting blades.  I need to re-evaluate, after the heads up I got from Ed Conley.  Thanks, Ed!Agape GuyEverlast Power I-MIG 200 (dual voltage)Everlast PowerArc 200 stickHarbor Freight Titanium 125 Easy FluxHypertherm Powermax 30Way too many power tools

Reply:My Milwaukee dry saw cuts faster than my Milwaukee abrasive chop does even with being more careful with the blade.  In terms of dust and sparks the dry saw is much cleaner to operate and requires little to no clean up of the joint.  That comes at a price.  I got the dry saw for $349 as a refurb.  New  they can be almost $500.Sounds like the OP could get away with using the HF abrasive chop.  It's on sale now for $70 and for home use should be fine.  It's not a Milwaukee or a Dewalt but it's about $100 less than either of those.Enough stuff to build and repair wrinkled up race cars or bring a classic back to life...
Reply:Id buy this, http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/1006346...4#.UUVBXDdupgh Its cheaper.I have a ryobi abrasive saw that I have abused for the last 8 or 9 years with no problems what so ever. I hold dewalt above ryobi, so for 199 I'd go for it.
Reply:CPO Dewalt has the 14" chop for $159 reconditioned.Enough stuff to build and repair wrinkled up race cars or bring a classic back to life...

Reply:I have had decent luck with a regular miter saw with a metal cutting blade. It's a makita and its still going after 10 years of cutting metal and wood. You just cant push too hard on it

Reply:The biggest I cut in it was 1/4 wall 4 inch square tubing. Most of us the time 120 wall or 10 awg stuff. It doesn't get used everyday, so I'm not saying it would be good for a fab shop or somethingBut if you need to cut some stuff every now and then it works just fine. Like I said tho, don't push real hard. The bearings aren't as heavy duty as a metal chop saw

Reply:I just ordered the Northern Tool 14" dry cut saw. It'll be here Tuesday. Seemed like a good overall deal to me anyway. $279 with free shipping.Northern Tool 14" dry cut saw
Reply:That Northern saw looks almost identical to the Rage saw...even has the same arbor diameter.
Reply:My main reason for going with the NT saw over the Rage was the hroizontal handle on the NT. Seemed to me like the handle and trigger configuration on the NT would be better. He > me
Reply:Originally Posted by bert the welderThe lack of dust is a big plus for sure. My problem is I cut a lot of 3/16th-1/2" solid round and I don't think it would play well with a toothed blade. One slip between the teeth and blam-o!
Reply:Originally Posted by dstevensI cut several hundred feet of round stock a week, most about 8 mm.  No issues with teeth, cuts like butter.  The blade spins too fast to get hung up on the material.  I also use it to cut hardened drill rod.
