So got a Lincoln 175, beening useing the smaller rolls from tsc/lowes and there just not lasting long enough and with price saveing I'd love to use a 10 pound or bigger roll of wire as i'm starting a crawler project from ground up and running out sucks. I thought I seen someone mounted the roll out side the welder I assume drill a hole in back and run some kind of grommet for the wire to feed through?
Reply:Don't know about your Lincoln, but my Miller 175 takes the 11 lb rolls.                                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:The Lincoln 175 units (and similar, such as the 180, the 140, etc, etc) take 4" diameter spools (1-2 lb typically, depending on whether solid wire or FCAW wire) as well as 8" diameter spools (10-12 lb typically, again depending on whether solid wire or FCAW wire). If you want to try and run 12" diameter or larger spools/baskets, etc, then you would have to try and rig up some sort of external bracket for the wire and let it feed through and into the drive mechanism in the welder.  It's doable. But it's pretty easy to just run 8" diameter spools in the machine right on the spindle in the wire compartment.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:ya is it not most small to average sized welders can handle a 4.98 kg spool.is it just me or does this preset 1-2 pound for lincoln's welders....make them a lot of money? since most small hardware stores sell 1-2 pound...and the smallest of quantities usually are the most! so they get you to keep buying them because they are cheap... but in the long run it all adds up doesn't it.Or i could be wrong. but the bigger ones sure add up!

Reply:An artist friend of mine made an adapter to mount a 44 lb spool on the back of his 110v Lincoln....it was slick but then he has been building and rebuilding Indy 500 type cars for about 50 yrs.

Reply:Yep,  and that little pin is supposed to line up with a hole in the spool to keep the roll from spinning and birdnesting.
