Here's a couple of mobile bases I made for two different band saws. Other than the hardware and wheels they were both made using leftover materials from other jobs. The first one is for a 23" Pehaka that I used to own but then sold it to my brother for his cabinet business as it was just too large for my small shop. The base of the saw has access doors front and rear that go clear to the bottom plate of the saw....which means that the saw can't sit down inside the base, it has to sit on top.I machined 4 hold downs out of Cold Rolled Steel that use shoulder screws that thread into the base. Then I used angle-tipped set screws on the top that will screw down against the base of the saw. there are also angle-tipped set screws on the bottom that tighten up against the shoulder screw to keep everything snug. (The 1/2" plate in the pics is there to show how the clamps work). The base is made from 2"x3"x.188" tubing and I made the front caster mount out of 3/16" cold rolled.I made the level adjuster from 1/2" cold rolled rod, 1/2" acme rod, and the pads are held on with shoulder screws as well so they rotate independently from the acme rod.The rear wheels are 6" and the front caster is 4".The last pic shows the band saw when it was still in my shop.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:I replaced the Pehaka with a 14" Powermatic model 143 (awesome little bandsaw btw).I made this base from 1.5" x 3" tubing, 3/16" cold rolled plate, and 1.25" round tube. http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Nice work, Paul, but I've got to ask, doesn't it take a long long time welding that stuff up when you, obviously, must be measuring each individual weld with a micrometer between each dip?(frikkin' cyborgs takin' over the world and welding and everything)Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Beautiful work.  I love how low you kept it.  I really like the arm setup you did for the front wheel in the first one.  This is the first time I have heard of someone working to downsize shop tool equipment but it's obvious you put a lot of thought into it.  Cool stuff.
Reply:Seriously...... I look forward to the day that my fab and welding skill remotely resembles stuff like this.....Nice work..... I enjoy looking at your welds like I enjoy staring at a fire....... Reply:Wow, beautiful work! I love the support you made for the front caster, to help keep the whole unit lower to the ground. The welds are beautiful, but so is the planning, and the forming of the individual pieces. Awesome!
Reply:ZT, Beautiful welds, great fab & design - proof in my estimation that cyborgs live among us.I have a question for you regarding the cart with the T handle threaded rod. When you were welding the coupling nut to the bracket do you do anything special not to mess up the threads from the heat? Do you end up having to run a tap through it after welding?thanks - Great work

Reply:What size castors are on that second one?Awesome Design and Execution!!!Nice, beautiful work.  And...damn, I need to get more TIG practice in, your welds make me feel inadequate ..--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:If you would powder coat the bases and sell them, they would cost more than the saw!  Very nice
Reply:I think this is my favorite part. I hope to need to make a part in this fashion one day, so I can mimic this little guy and look like a fabricating guru Of course my son would probably call me on it and say "nice design, who'd you steal that from?" Reply:Ya man that is a nice strong stand. I deffently screen shot a couple of your ideas. What rod are you using tho and argon cfh?
Reply:Ok, one last question, what angle did you cut the main beams at and what tool did you use?
Reply:I know that this is a revived old'ish thread, but damn those TIG beads are tight!! Good gosh man, the uniformity and color is amazing! Do you have an integrated circuit in your arm or something?!? No, but seriously, it is very inspirational and thanks for sharing.-Niche
