Looking for the optional Miller Power Factor Correction Kit for my Syncrowave 250DX.If someone has a syncro they bought with the kit installed and doesn't want/need/use it I would like to buy it. Or, if someone has detailed information on how to make and install my own kit I'm open to that, too. Let me know what you got!!http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Are you aware that the idle power consumption goes up a ton when you put the caps in?miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:Yes...thanks.I have been researching this for a while and with my current (lack of) electrical service this is just about my only option for doing the large/thick aluminum parts I build. Already using helium and preheat but still need more from the machine.I have read that others have made their own "PFC" kit and used a switch board in order to turn the caps on/off as needed.Any further info on that would be appreciated.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Miller4less has the capacitor field kit if you don't find them anywhere cheaper.http://miller4less.com/advanced_sear...=14&search.y=7I feel your pain as far as the lack of electrical capacity. Been using inverter welders because I don't always have enough power (mobile). Also have to use phase converters for my drill and grinder.Somewhere there was a thread on the Miller board about a guy that made his own PFC. It was a few years back, I will see if I can find it.-IanMiller Dynasty 350Miller XMT 304
Reply:Thanks for the link Ian. Hoping to be able to snag one up for cheaper than new. ...but will go that route if needed. I really want a Dynasty 350 (used to use them in an R&D dept I ran) but my Syncro has performed flawlessly for the last 10 years and there are other tools I could use the money for before buying another welder (currently have 5 welders total). http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Whats up Paul! Have'nt seen you around for a while. Speaking of whereabouts are you anywhere near the Fresno area, i'm not familiar with Cali to well but I get out there once a year to see some friends. And usually spend a couple days lounging with nothing to do. I know your upland, but is that northern Cali?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Another bump for this!!Contacted Miller to buy this kit and it's two weeks out (should have just bought it when I started this thread). No LWS has it either.I've got to start welding 16 big aluminum parts on Friday...would REALLY like to have this for the job. http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Too bad motor run capacitors of that size are not more common.Do oil filled capacitors work for that application ?
Reply:Here is my kit and installation instructions for the Syncro 350.  I would assume the 40 mfd caps would be more than you'd need for the Syncro250.  Just be sure you get caps with the voltage rating somewhat higher than your line voltage. The kit uses (4) 40mfd caps wired in parallel.  These caps aren't very hard to find.  I paid $ 15 each for them.I have attached some photos and a PDF file of the instructions.  ....(Even though you didn't like my idea about unbanning Wm McCormack) Attached Images Attached ImagesMiller Power Factor Correction Kit Syncro350.pdf (92.4 KB, 138 views)Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:If your 100 sub has decent size wire coming from your main, I don't see why you could not upgrade your breaker. I am out about 125 ft, and Run #2 aluminum  for my service. Really rated for 95, but #2 copper is over 100 amps. and 5 times as much $$$. It will run my lights and Esab 252 at full tilt on AC output.Basically the same as your Syncro 250..Last edited by Brand X; 06-28-2012 at 01:33 AM.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i

Maybe you have a weak breaker. I would change it out. If you have #2 copper, I sure would be tempted to go a bit bigger on the breaker Are you using a whole lot of wave balance for penetration? That could jack the amp draw up some.. Inverters just don't care about those things. Amp draw does not change with wave balance.Does not help you right now though.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:Hey ZTI run my syncro 250 with slow blow fuses, I think thats whats what is recomended. I blew a few fuses a couple years ago and asked a buddy at my lws, said to check blade tension in box, one was looser and was in location of blown fuses, changed box and has been OK since.PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
Reply:You could also get a separate shop service. I could have upgraded my main but there was no reason to disturb anything and more total power is better. I can also see what my shop uses.  No interruption of home power except when they connect to the pole, very low hassle.Might be time for a fat-tired cart as a temp home for your welder after you get the job done. Space-saver tires are great for that as they still roll acceptably if they go flat.

Reply:It strikes me as funny when you know what you want and people keep trying to give you and alternative. You didn't ask for alternatives. you asked for a PFC kit. I have it on my Precision Tig 275 and I have cranked that baby up to 340 amps. no problems. I have a 125amp feed to my sub and an 80amp feed from the sub to the machine. Of course I didn't really need 340amps, so I didn't weld long enough to trip the breaker. I have not noticed a big difference when I use it on my electric bill. But then again, with a pool, jacuzzi, and an all electric house, no gas, and 2 teenagers that refuse to turn anything off, I have a ginormous electric bill every month. so....I am not really making a point. Reply:It's not like a Lincoln 275 would solve his problem either... Thermal-arc Arcmaster, or Dynasty would have...By the way, nice work there!!Last edited by Brand X; 07-03-2012 at 02:39 PM.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i

Reply:I think it's funny because he has a lot of experience and probably has thought it through. His conclusion was that he needed a PFC and yet everyone had suggestions otherwise. There are a 100 ways to skin a cat. I know. But some people want to do it one way, not another. That's all. I find myself committing to one way and everyone else wants me to do it another. I guess I was just empathizing with him.
