after some bickering with my mechanic buddy, he has got me to agree to switch to full synthetic oil in both of my '57's sa200's after i told him i was doing an oil change about once every week to week and a half (100hrs)....based on his information about the BG products that he uses @ his shop and in all of his vehicles (and after he loaned me one of his trucks for a cross country expedition where the engine oil life meter was @ 40% before my trip and i blasted another 7k onto the truck in a week, it was still showing 15% when i dropped the truck off with about 12k worth of miles between oil change....he usually does 10k oil changes with the full synthetic oils....) he has me sold, but i am a bit apprehensive to do 500-1000hr oil changes even though he is setting me up @ his cost for the oil and filters (which is about $60). one foreseeable draw back is that i travel doing my work and if the machine needs a splash of oil in the 500-1000hr time (it uses NOT A DROP in the 100hr range) it needs to be with the same product he said, which he is willing to send me off with a quart or two to tide me over, but still a potential hassle.... it is not that i do not trust my friends extensive knowledge and experience with heavy trucks and equipment, but, i would like a few hundred second opinions  when it comes to my livelihood. any suggestions or opinions as to hour interval with full synthetic would be greatly appreciated.
Reply:i did the cross over to full synthetic yesterday, and my buddy said how extra slippery this oil is....all i can say is holy sh!t....i run my machine @ 88.5OCV and did a before and after test on the OCV's and it shot them UP to 96 with the full synthetic oil! i am glad i did not just change the oil and get back on it....i would have fought my machine hard to keep up! still i am a little apprehensive over pushing the hours to 1000, though it would be nice to do the preventative maintenance every 3 months or so as opposed to close to every week, however, i will still change the air filter oil still every 100hrs until the snow flies.
Reply:I have been running Amsoil in my sa200 for about two years and my machine loves it. I dont run as many hours as yall but I change mine one time a year, which comes to about 900 hr. The oil is clean when I dump it. I sent in a oil sample to a local test lab and the responce was it can run longer. I thought wow this is some good s---. I run it in my truck also but I run it 15k and change it, sent in oil sample on it and it came back it could run longer too. It claims it can run 25k but I am a hands on kinda guy and I just cant bring my self to run it that long, but I may do it this time I dont know yet.1990 SA 200Miller 225  Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com
Reply:Hmmmmm, I never drank the synthetic oil coolaid. I'm kinda old school, and figure if I change it often, I can use any oil. But since I don't use my welder that much, this may be a solution to the seasonal weight issue. Hmmmmm......."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
