Reply:Originally Posted by PipelinerActually, this is a very popular myth (especially amongst sellers who have no idea what they have).  I've never actually scrapped one out, but I think I know most of the innard workings of these babies.  Of the 360 lbs of awesomeness, there's probably less than 10# of actual copper in the whole schebang.  The other 350 lbs is merely an iron boat anchor.
Reply:Ok I talked to the seller. He said it welds fine on low to medium setting but does t quite get the juice it needs at higher settings. What ya think??HH 190Uniweld TorchesLincoln 225 ac-sMarquette Starjet torches gauges
Reply:They're just like the sa200. I bought one (engine seized) at an auction a couple of years ago. I was bidding against the local scrap yard and another guy who was just bidding with hopes of getting it cheap enough he could snag the starter off of it for another machine. He apologized for "running the bid up"  and explained the scrap yard shredded three of them the previous month and refused to sell any parts because there was more $$$ in copper in the whole machine than it was worth to sell individual parts. The power switch alone on the Idealarc is worth $30-$50. Not to mention the polarity switch, amp control wheel, output studs, fan motor, and tins. My favorite CL adds are the meth heads selling a 1997 Lincoln 225 AC cracker box for $350 that contains 400 lbs of "pure copper" easily worth $500 at the scrap yard.

Reply:A buddy and I bought a few Lincoln machines of various types from a local community college (including one like yours). All were wired for 440V, so check that one when you get it. If it has a really weak arc, pop the cover and it has a chart on how to wire it for 220V. It *will* weld set to 440, but will be really weak.I thought my buddy was going to do a backflip when I changed the wiring and it started welding awesome :-)

I'm asking him where he got it and how long he used it. Said he'd save it for me. 360 mile round trip....worth it?HH 190Uniweld TorchesLincoln 225 ac-sMarquette Starjet torches gauges

Reply:There really isn't much to those machines to fail. If the crank turns, the shunt is moving. That adjusts your amps. If the crank doesn't turn, chances are it's simply stuck from lack of being used and with some work it will free up. Other than that there's a fan, the on / off switch and the diodes to rectify AC to DC. They are about as dead simple as you can get. Since top end is 250 amps, even if it for some strange reason only put out 1/2 power you'd still be able to run most 1/8" rods.My bet also goes to being wired incorrectly. These machines are about as rugged as they come.  I'd buy that machine sight unseen no problem for what he's asking even with the possible problem..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks, What is the range of thicknesses the old roundtop is capable of. And are they good tig welders with the freq box? Originally Posted by DSWMechanically it's very similar to a Tbolt. Reply:They'll do basic DC tig no problem. AC tig even with the HF box will leave a lot to be desired. You will really want a dedicated AC/Dc tig for alum.250 amps will stick weld just about anything the home hobbyist will want to do. I generally don't have a need for stick over about 180 amps, so I'd have to look up the rod specs on what size rod you could burn, but it's bigger than you'd probably ever want to buy a box of..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
