My employer slipped in a random test plate on me today ... I feel good about the plate but i had some questions since this was my first test plate with a backing bar (everything previous was open root). The setup was as follows:3G - uphill3/8" plate thickness3/16" backing bar (seemed odd to me ... i expected 1/4")22.5* bevelFeathered edge1/8" root gap (i thought it was supposed to be 1/4")1/16" E71T-1 w/ CO2 gasMy question is in reference to the bold lines .... from my recollection of the D1.1 code i thought it required a 1/4" backing strip and a 1/4" root gap.Am i wrong or was this an odd ball test / not to spec?AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200 Originally Posted by WelderMike I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.

Reply:Thanks for the info CEP! Saved that pic for future reference ... Ill discuss this with the shop foreman again ... i mentioned the root gap before the test and he said "nope, 1/8" is what we have always used"The only thing i can guess is they have possibly qualified their procedure to D1.1 as it is obviously not a D1.1 standard procedure .... but it doesnt seem like the type of shop to qualify their own procedureAWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200 Originally Posted by WelderMike I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:Could be, I worked in a fab shop in the 1970s. We had an NRC welding inspector with us at all times.. He would write up his own procedures some times.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400 |
