I wondered after reading the thread about "how many grinders do you have" if you guys replace the cods and make them long so as to not need an extension cord. I buy a tool plug it in and listen to it then replace the cord with a 25 to 30 ft cord. I have lots of extension cords and hate useing them. I then put a velcro cord holder so I can coil up the cord for when I put it away. All my tools are like that. Just wondering? Ps Ikeep the cords in case they have to go in for warranty. I just throw them in a box of misc cords.Last edited by dumb as a stump; 04-14-2013 at 11:03 AM.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:The only tool I replaced the cord with a longer on would be my circular saws. There I have like a 10-12' cord on them since I find the plugs on stock ones tend to get caught on the edge of a sheet. I'm often swapping power tools too much to deal with having to walk all the way over to the wall to unplug them to swap tools. Many times I keep the end of the extension cord draped over the saw horse so I don't have to bend down to reach the cord to unplug the tool. I only use multi taps or power strips when working with "stationary" tools, chopsaw, shop vac and router table etc. Other times I just find the clutter of cords and the short length is a PITA..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I tried it once thinking I could do without a extension cord. I found it cumbersome even at only 10' length. To hard to store the grinder. Also it's to far to go and change plugs to use another tool. To top it all off if you've got all of them plugged in then you've got a huge tangle of cords on the ground. There's already to much of that what with the welding cables, torch hoses, extension cord, etc.   I've actually found I prefer a shorter cord than some tools are coming with now days. But you don't want it to short or it'll catch all the time when you're using it.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:I always replace the cord on new power tools with a short "stubby" cord. The stub also receives a twist-lock plug, that fits my extension cord. In this way, there is no winding up the cord to store the tool, just put it on the shelf. The plug never dis-connects while in use, either. The biggest advantage, however, is neighbors not borrowing my "220" volt power tools.Bgbkwndo

Reply:i usually do the opposite on the big grinders, I'm a big fan of the old magnesium dewalt/B&D wildcat grinders. they are heavy as a cinderblock but never fail and chew metal like they hate it.  They all have pigtails. i like them short enough to that the plug doesn't catch on the table or any of our clamp racks in the table legs. usually about a foot long. small grinder get burned up so fast we rarely mess with them. if a cord does get cut we just wire a new plug where ever it gets cut.  easier to deal with easier to store.
Reply:milwaukee offers that with their qwik-loc line. most of my milwaukee tools have that option. then I have 8' and 25' cords to choose from.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:Short cords so the plugs won't snag and less to wrap up and put awayBudman
Reply:If you put a short cord on doesn't the plug forever get caught on the edges of stuff (like the bench whatever your grinding etc)? I would think that that short cord would always be getting caught on stuff (and pissing me off). When Im working on something I usually only need 1 grinder. But If I need both I will lay out both cords.  If I dont have to screw around with the grinders plugged into extensions (usually under my feet) and comming out while im waking around and getting it caught on edges of stuff etc. Maybe its just me. And coiled up and retained with velcro strips makes them neat to store (also no tangle). I also rarely find It gets damaged when coiled either. Reply:The P60 Black and Decker grinders I use mostly, have a lockable plug in the socket back end, you can make up 3 different cord lengths for 3 grinders if you wanted and take all 3 out to a job with one grinder etc etc ? DD.
Reply:I just bring out the extension cords. I buy short ones (10-15') because I am always within that length of an outlet and hate wrapping up long cords when they aren't needed.Honestly I would rather have short cords on my tools (1' or less) and just use the extension cord and only have to wrap up one cord instead of wrapping up the tool cord and extension cord.
Reply:I prolly have 20 extension cords and hate to use them. I work outside my garage (too much equipment from job and a 3 bay rental shop) and I am not a professional welder but have been a tradesman in the electrical field for over 25 years and just recently quit. So I am taking away from this that I am not normal. I have long suspected it, now I know...Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few.
