I've got a delivery coming a 55 gallon barrel of sulfuric acid for anodizing aluminum  that weighs 700 lbs. Are there any scissor type lifts or other gizmo that could unload it from the back of a freight truck? This company doesn't have trucks with lift gates. Maybe I just need to rent a lift gate truck!
Reply:Forklift comes to mind. You could probably also make do with any loader with a  bucket or forks. I've even unloaded drums down ramps, but I don't think I'd opt for that method with sulfuric acid however..You could also do it old school with cribbing and jacks, but it would take a while..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Do you have a foklift?I have a drum lift/tilter that works great. I bought mine used off CL.http://www.wescomfg.com/html/drum_eq...ter_tilter.htmYou might poke around here for some other ideas.http://www.wescomfg.com/html/drum_equipment/index.htm
Reply:AluminiumWelderIf its for anodizing it hot, 90%+, and later titrated [cut] to the bath. 55 gallons of H2 SO4 this hot, on a DOT transport, should be on a pallet,in a special vessel, caged/heavy box, and not in a bare 55 gal. drum.Contact your supplier, request the container type and their shippingstandards, and prepare for the unloading counterpart. Reply:Use a forklift.  Even if you have to rent one.  Also, ensure that anyone in the area is wearing the appropriate fully sealed suit with a respirator and that you have the correct safety equipment there and ready in case anything goes wrong.  I've (very unfortunately) seen first hand a barrel full of sulfuric acid hit the ground, break open, and completely cover someone without a suit on.  It was honestly the most horrible thing I've ever seen or heard (he only lived for about 3 hours in the ICU afterwards).  When handling a large quantity of acid, do not skimp on the safety equipment.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Rent a forklift any money you think you might save is not worth it if you have to call hazmat to clean up a spill. Last time we broke a hydro hose on a jlg man lift and lost 20 gallons of hydro fluid it was over $3000.00 to have a crew clean it up on a government job. I have rented a bobcat with forks on it and they charge me $200 for the day. I have also lined it up when I just have one pallet to unload to have them bring it wait and load it back up and they only charge me a $75.00 delivery fee instead of the $150 round trip.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Also when I unload drums of material I have them on a pallet and ratchet strap them to the back of the forklift as cheap insurance.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Once you get it unloaded (hopefully) safely, I hope that you have the proper safety equipment in the shop for your employees to work around that stuff..Plating can get really dangerous if done wrong.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Request supplier ship on truck with lift gate or find one that will.
Reply:thanks for all the help, I got it safely unloaded with lift gate truck.
Reply:I don't have any fancy fork lifts or the like. Personally I would whip up a steel strap to clamp around the top of the tank below the lip with a couple eyelets on it and use my cherry picker to lift the barrel off the truck.
Reply:H2SO4 does wonderful things to human tissue, immediately.  I have a nice scar on the back of my right hand from a 5 second exposure or about half the time it took me to rype this post.
Reply:http://www.wescomfg.com/html/drum_eq...rum_lifter.htmI unloaded hundreds of Barrels of Honey with this type of Lifter.  That said.  I would be much more careful with acid.  I have seen them slip.  Never lost one.
Reply:the fact that you can get a company to deliver a 55 gal drum of high concentration sulphuric acid to you with little to no knowledge about the product or concerns for its handling frankly scare me terribly.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:The fact that you can write such a  judgemental statement after everything is already taken care of quite frankly scares me as well.  If I had no concerns why would I even bother posting the original question? Duh. And your assumption of my knowledge level is just an ignorant jab.Last edited by AluminumWelder; 04-16-2013 at 09:11 AM.

Reply:I have to agree with Dualie.  Every single time I see a new thread by "AluminumWelder", I can't help but to think, "This guy's in over his head. Again..."Just the name "AluminumWelder" bugs me.  It's akin to me logging on to a medical forum and using the handle "BrainSurgeon".My name's not Jim....
Reply:The farmer method around these here parts is to use an engine hoist or one of those HF hoists you mount to the back of a truck, put a chain around the barrel and tharyago!
Reply:"your "skill" level has been posted all over this forum and you questioning my judgment? "There you go again with your condescending attitude. Not everyone was born all knowing and wise like you, ignorant people like me have to ask questions from time to time. If someone posts they safely unloaded it with a lift gate truck and then you post some BS obviously you can't read or your judgement is bad......Go fly a kite.
