I have a 220V spot welder with 6" tongs, standard tips, 5/8 diameter tongs.  I would like to purchase longer tongs, a Miller #040-198 12" or #040-199 18" , any idea if adding that lenght will decrease the performance of the spot welder, does it matter being solid copper tongs ? Thanks
Reply:I have a spot Welder for body work to me the whole problem with these spot welders is these cheap copper tips, one weld they pit, I am sure over at the Ford factory they are using tungsten? Copper is s good conductor but you don't need copper for entire length im sure if is an alloy so they don't bend so easy. Look for better tips 1/4 20x 3/8Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Reply:Added length will definitely affect the output rating.  See table 4-1 in this Miller spot welding handbook:http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/Resistance.pdfFor the Miller LMSW-52 2.5 kVA rated spot welder:6" tips: 6,750 A12" tips: 5,800 A18" tips: 4,850 A"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
