Hi guys,Set on getting my first , a thunderbolt xl225/150ac/dc welder, i spoke to a miller rep who said the old " whip and pause technique won't work any more since thay changed the transformer based machines.  He suggests a drag technique. That is all I know about that topic. I know I need to start practicing as soon as I get the machine. On really dirty and rusty metal, this would be my choice based on my limited experience. I know that a low OCV OF 70-80 amps is not enough, and that a 200 amp machine would be needed. My dulemma is : do i buy the 225/150 or go for the larger thunderbolt at 300 amps, but my shed has only a 50 amp breaker with #6 wire. Which unit would be the best as a first time stick machine? What is the correct technique for these newer machines? Is the 50 enough to connect the larger thunderbolt?Thank you for any advice,Jon
Reply:I am not going to get started on this one haha. the ole whip and pause technique wont work because of a change in transformer? Wtf is that suppose to mean. Yea you can drag it, but it will look like hammered dog doodoo. Whip that rod. Strike your arc like you would a match and go slightly out of your puddle and back up. depending on your heat and welding position you might have to go out of the puddle anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2". This will leave with you a nice "stacked" bead profile. I don't like your miller rep already  goes against everything I know.
Reply:I would shop around for a deal on an Everlast PowerArc 300. I got mine for $294.00. Here is what it will do with 6010. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Originally Posted by CEPI never thought about running 6010 like that before. Years ago on the Miller forum there was a discussion about this subject. Come to find out, a lot of pipe welders run 6010 like 7018. So I had to give it a try.
Reply:HAHAHA turned this into a different discussion. Now I have ran 6010 by dragging before. I just didn't like the results. Now on the lines of what CEP said... Yes it CAN look good if your on a roll out or welding pipe downhill. Structural I just don't drag my 6010. To me personally I get better penetration, bead characteristics, and tie in on the toes by whipping my rod.
Reply:I have the ac/dc 225/150 thunderbolt, it will burn 5p just fine, just takes a while to get used to because it it totally different than using a machine with arc control and hot start. 90 amps or more for 1/8 5p.  What are you welding pipe, plate, or building something?
Reply:If you're buying new you will spend close to $500. Why not get one of these instead and have a whole lot more power and duty cycle?  I am sure both of these will burn 6010 quite well.http://longisland.craigslist.org/tls/4968222417.htmlhttp://newjersey.craigslist.org/hvo/4953488347.htmlMiller Multimatic 255
Reply:Forget about the TBolt.  This little baby will run 1/8" 6010 all day everyday.http://newhaven.craigslist.org/tls/4958047979.html
Reply:And for years to come! My 1937 Idealarc 300 still does a pretty good job with 6010.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thunderbolts are junk. I would actually buy an Everlast stick welder before a thunderbolt. Maxstar 150's will not run 6010. And it sounds like the Miller rep basically said a thunderbolt won't run 6010. If you can't step out of the puddle and keep the rod lit, then the welder isnt cellulose compatible. I have an old Thermal Arc 300S, a 400 amp machine that can't run 6010, crank up the amps crazy high and it still can't keep the rod lit for more than a few seconds. Or try finding a Lincoln Invertec 275? A fair price on Ebay should be $600. I wouldn't pay any more than $800. And they are great machines.Local 83

Reply:Pipliner's  CL listing for that Dialarc would be my 1st choice, Louie's NJ CL listing for the Dialarc would be my 2nd choice.I can't say anything about the newer T bolts, but my older one isn't too bad with 6010. I rate that more to the fact I'm simply not all that good at whip and pause more than I blame the machine. I mentioned to some one here earlier I'd happily trade my Tbolt for a nice condition Idealarc. Pipeliners listing is higher that the other one, but I'd still be more than happy to pay that. That price is what I typically see Tbolts and tapped Box store AC/DC Lincolns going for used. I'm a die hard Milelr fan, but I'd still take that round top Idealarc over that Dialarc, not that the Dialarc is a bad machine, just that Idealarcs are so nice..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:What is the deal with inverter welders not running 6010 properly?  Even my buddy who is a very experienced electrical engineer couldn't explain it to me.
