We happened to pick up this truck at RB two weeks ago, and just now are getting to working on it.First thing was to grease everything bumper to bumper, bed and all.Check ALL fluids, chance engine and tranny filters, air up tires, and changer differential lube. Then, we had plnned on building a fancy front brush guard bumper for it.And the rear trailer hitch was POORLY welded. So,Grab a root beer, and enjoy the pics.~John

Reply:Nice work John. Thought about putting some expanded metal in the center for added protection?

Reply:John, Good candidate for 6013. Jk, looks good man. Repurposing is a good thing. Gotta ask though, is this meant to protect from moose or brush. If moose than you might want to beaf if up a little.-Jonathan

Reply:Until I saw the last set of pictures I was about to tell you that two pieces of flat strap, no matter how thick they are, do not cut it for holding a bumper+brush guard. They are going to bend with the slightest impact no matter what. Now it looks much more substantial.however, instead of welding the brush guard over the two pieces of flat strap on top of the square tube, I think you could have done better notching the brush guard to allow it to rest flat along the whole piece of tubing. This should allow you to place some more stitch welds through the whole length!Other than that, it looks good from here!Mikel

Reply:So,I welded them all up, than put the bumper back on the truck. All the bolt holes line up, and everything fits. So,Any final thoughts???~John

Reply:Looks good so far.  Since you asked earlier, (and already used them) yes I would second the opinion with using the rustoleum rattle cans.   Keep it simple.   I just hope you wire-wheeled all that  surface rust off first, before painting. What's the 8010 for?  Is it because that's what you have on hand?  Couldn't you stay with 7018 exclusively for this upgrade project?   You're  just going to grind out the "old" (terrible) welds and go over the top with 7018, right?  Or do you have such DEEP roots that need to be filled first?  I'm Just curious because I thought 8010's filled in so much,  that a cover pass of 7018 on your relatively "thin" mild steel might look like a piece of rope.   I dunno, that's why I ask. Thanks.Last edited by SuperArc; 07-13-2014 at 12:51 PM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Hey,I use 8010 because I got about 5 boxes of 1/8, 5/32, and 3/16.I use it for first passes on real rusty stuff, or turn it down for thin stuff.I'd use any cellulosic rod if I had them, but I use what I have.I think it called shield arc 70+.Burns good, with a clean crisp puddle.I'll reason with you guys here....Not every weld on here is perfect.I got porosity in places burning out those nasty welds that I couldn't get to to grind out.I can assure you every weld is better than before.I will make a video of this hitch pulling a heavy load. You've seen that dodge trucks pulling hay trailer on my yt channel??Thanks for the compliments. But, haha, I didn't show you all the welds...Anyway,Thanks SuperArc!!!John~
